After making an early run at the PGA Championship, Hale Irwin returns to the Senior Tour this
week in search of his third straight BankBoston title.
Within four shots of the lead after 36 holes at Medinah, Ill., Irwin faltered in the final two rounds, shooting 78-75 to finish 15 shots back.
Irwin struggled early this season but has returned to the form that made him the most dominant player on the Senior Tour the last two years. He has recorded five victories in his last nine starts and has finished in the top three in each of his last five.
Irwin, 54, is second on the money list behind Bruce Fleisher with $1,567,255 after accumulating more than $5.2 million over the past two seasons.
Irwin loves Nashawtuc Country Club. Over his last six rounds, he is 28-under. Last year, Irwin defeated Jay Sigel by two strokes to successfully defend his title. He also won by two shots in 1997 and will attempt to join Chi Chi Rodriguez as the only players to win three straight titles here.
Fleisher has turned some heads during his rookie campaign on the Senior Tour. He is tied with Irwin for the Senior Tour lead with five victories and leads Irwin in season earnings. Fleisher has finished in the top 10 in seven of his last nine starts, winning the Long Island Classic two weeks ago.

The players who round out the top five on the money list -- Allen Doyle, Larry Nelson and Dana Quigley -- also are entered. Doyle has three wins in his initial Senior Tour season, while
Nelson and Quigley each have two victories.
Former champions competing include Bob Charles (1989-90), Jim Albus (1994), Isao Aoki (1995) and Jim Dent (1996).
Also in the field is Christy O'Connor Jr, who claimed his second Senior Tour title of the year at last week's Foremost Insurance Championship.
Also teeing it up this week will be Mike McCullough, who is playing in his 100th consecutive Senior Tour event for which he is eligible. McCullough's streak, the longest in Senior Tour history, began at the 1996 EMC2 Kaanapali Classic.
