Gavin is a premier high school shortstop out of Louisiana who has a well-rounded game and all the tools to stick at the position. In the infield he has good range and a solid arm. He tends to drop his arm on some of his throws which causes the ball to sail, but that will be an easy fix at the next level. This past August in the 2011 Area Code Games, Cecchini looked outstanding working the double play with fellow teammate C.J. Hinojosa.
At the plate Cecchini has a level line-drive swing with gap power. He looks to have a solid hit tool with average power. He has a long stride which creates a lot of his momentum moving forward, but he stays back and always squares up the ball.
His older brother, Garin, was a fourth round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2010 draft. Gavin looks to one-up his brother by being projected as a first round pick in this upcoming 2012 MLB draft.
Univ. of Mississippi Release, Nov. 15, 2011
Cecchini comes to the Rebels from Barbe High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he plays shortstop. As a junior, he hit .532 with 13 doubles, 11 home runs and tallied 32 stolen bases. This past season, Cecchini earned All-America honors from several organizations, including Baseball America, MaxPreps, ESPN, Under Armour and was named the MVP of the American Team at the Under Armour All-America Game.
The infielder also was named a Class 5A All-State selection and the Gatorade Player of the Year for Louisiana. He also competed with the USA Baseball 18U Team and is the 17th-rated player in the nation by Perfect Game.
Gavin's a very dynamic player," said Ole Miss assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Carl Lafferty. He's a guy that comes in and makes an immediate impact on a program. He influences the game on both sides of the ball with his bat offensively and certainly with his glove at the shortstop position."
