Wilson Defensive Player of the Day
Wilson Defensive Player of the Day
J.R. Davis, St. Patrick-St. Vincent (Vallejo, Calif.), 2012, Oakland Athletics
There were several outstanding plays on Day 4 at Area Code, but none matched the one Davis made on a sinking line drive in the seventh inning of the A's 6-1 victory over the Washington Nationals.
As a result of his fielding prowess, the Athletics' centerfielder is the day's winner of the Wilson Defensive Player of the Day Award.
Breaking right off the crack of the bat, Davis streaked far to his left and in, took the fly ball on the run, stretched out fully extended and kept the ball in his glove after sliding along the finely manicured outfield grass of Blair Field.
"I got a good jump on that one, laid out and prayed I got it," said Davis, who is uncommitted to a college but likes Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Texas and Cal State Fullerton.
Besides baseball, where he hit .556 last season with a .907 slugging percentage, Davis is on the Bruins' basketball team where he plays the two guard and had per game averages last season of 5.6 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.5 assists.
He also played football his freshman and sophomore seasons.
"I'm undecided on whether to play basketball this coming year because I really want to concentrate on baseball," Davis remarked.
As for the best aspect of his game and his goals at the Area Code Games, Davis tells ESPN RISE, "I would say I try to work harder on defense because it's my specialty. My goals at Area Code are to show my speed, my defensive ability and my opposite field power at the plate."
