ESPNHS 2012 Baseball All-Americans

The best of the best on the diamond from coast to coast for the 2012 season

This was one of the more memorable high school baseball seasons in recent memory, from Byron Buxton and Lance McCullers Jr. playing a game of "Can You Top This?" each week to American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) making a surprising run to the No. 1 spot in the POWERADE FAB 50.

There was a plethora of incredible individual performances this season as well, but only 45 players made the cut for the ESPNHS Baseball All-American team.

First Team

C: Taylor Hawkins, Carl Albert (Midwest City, Okla.), Senior
Drafted in the 12th round by Tampa Bay, Hawkins blasted 28 homers while hitting .391 with 81 RBIs to help Carl Albert to its third state title in six years.

1B: Matt Olson, Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.), Senior
Two-way standout and compensation-round pick by the A's, Olson hit .407 with 11 homers and 52 RBIs and was 12-1 with a 1.64 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 85.1 innings.

MIF: Gavin Cecchini, Barbe (Lake Charles, La.), Senior
Named Gatorade State Player of the Year for the second straight season, Cecchini hit .467 with a .527 OBP, seven homers, 32 RBIs and 31 stolen bases while leading Barbe to the Class 5A state title. Selected in the first round by the New York Mets.

MIF: Corey Seager, Northwest Cabarrus (Concord, N.C.), Senior
Gatorade State Player of the Year, Seager hit .519 with 10 homers and 37 RBIs and had a ridiculous .664 on-base percentage. He was drafted in the first round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

3B: Joey Gallo, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas), Senior
Drafted No. 39 overall by the Texas Rangers, Gallo led Gorman to its seventh consecutive state title. Named Gatorade State Player of the Year, Gallo hit .509 with 21 homers and 80 RBIs.

OF: Albert Almora, Mater Academy (Hialeah Gardens, Fla.), Senior
First-round pick of the Cubs, Almora hit .603 with six homers and 34 RBIs. Fanned just three times in 87 at-bats and added 24 stolen bases in 25 games.

OF: Byron Buxton, Appling County (Baxley, Ga.), Senior
The No. 2 overall pick by the Minnesota Twins and No. 1 player in the ESPN 100, Buxton hit .513 with a .628 on-base percentage, three homers, 35 RBIs and 38 stolen bases. He went 10-1 on the mound with a 1.90 ERA, five saves and 154 strikeouts in 81 innings.

OF: Courtney Hawkins, Carroll (Corpus Christi, Texas), Senior
Helped Carroll to the Class 5A state semifinals, hitting .421 with 11 homers, 39 RBIs, 17 stolen bases and a .563 on-base percentage. He also went 5-2 on the mound with a 0.95 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. Hawkins was drafted in the first round by the Chicago White Sox.

UTL: Wyatt Mathisen, Calallen (Corpus Christi, Texas), Senior
Mathisen played short and catcher and also starred as a right-handed pitcher. He hit .433 with three homers and 40 RBIs and was 11-1 with seven saves and 98 strikeouts in 79 innings. He was drafted in the second round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

UTL: Ty Moore, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), Senior
Moore dominated at the inaugural USA Baseball National High School Invitational, which Mater Dei won. The UCLA recruit and Gatorade State Player of the Year was 12-1 with a 0.83 ERA and hit .406 with three homers and 23 RBIs.

LHP: Kyle Carter, Columbus (Ga.), Senior
Columbus won its third straight state title and 12th overall thanks largely to Carter, who went 12-2 with a 0.98 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 86 innings. He also hit .302 with 14 homers and 31 RBIs.

LHP: Stephen Gonsalves, Cathedral Catholic (San Diego), Junior
One of the top prospects for next year's draft, Gonsalves went 10-0 with 79 strikeouts in 66 innings to help lead the Dons to their second straight CIF San Diego Section Division III title.

RHP: Ty Hensley, Santa Fe (Edmond, Okla.), Senior
Guided Santa Fe to the state semifinals with both his arm and his bat. The first-round pick of the New York Yankees was 10-0 with 111 strikeouts in 55.1 innings and hit .447 with 10 homers and 42 RBIs.

RHP: Kyle Marsh, Spruce Creek (Port Orange, Fla.), Sophomore
Went 11-0 with a 0.43 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 72.2 innings pitching in Florida's highest classification. Threw a perfect game and no-hitter during the postseason as Spruce Creek went on to win the Class 8A state crown.

RHP: Lance McCullers Jr., Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.), Senior
Gatorade National Player of the Year allowed just two earned runs all season, going 13-0 with a 0.18 ERA and 140 strikeouts in 77.1 innings. Was drafted No. 41 overall by Houston.


Second Team

C: Zach Collins, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), Junior
Hit .441 with four homers and 31 RBIs for the Patriots, who won a Class 5A state title and finished No. 1 in the POWERADE FAB 50.

1B: Ryan Tellez, Elk Grove (Calif.), Junior
USC commit batted .571 with six homers and 56 RBIs and is rated No. 49 in the ESPN 60.

MIF: Addison Russell, Pace (Fla.), Senior
The Oakland A's first-round pick hit .358 with eight homers and 33 RBIs to lead Pace to a Class 6A state runner-up finish.

MIF: Mikey White, Spain Park (Hoover, Ala.), Senior
Gatorade State Player of the Year hit .388 with nine homers, 37 RBIs and 19 steals and went 8-2 with 1.13 ERA and 61 strikeouts.

3B: Daniel Robertson, Upland (Calif.), Senior
Hit .560 with six homers and 31 RBIs and was compensation-round pick of the A's.

OF: Anthony Alford, Petal (Miss.), Senior
Two-sport star hit .483 with four homers, 31 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. Drafted by the Blue Jays and signed with Southern Miss for football.

OF: Dylan Cozens, Chaparral (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Senior
Blasted a school-record 19 homers, including a walk-off shot in the state final. Drafted in the second round by the Phillies.

OF: Tate Matheny, Westminster Christian (Town & Country, Mo.), Senior
Son of Cardinals manager Mike Matheny led squad to Class 3 state title, hitting .610 with 11 homers, 51 RBIs and 25 stolen bases.

UTL: Troy Conyers, El Capitan (Lakeside, Calif.), Senior
Two-time San Diego Section Player of the Year went 9-2 with a 1.02 ERA and 131 strikeouts and also hit .394 with five homers and 26 RBIs.

UTL: Jake Thompson, Rockwall-Heath (Heath, Texas), Senior
The Tigers' second-round pick hit .419 with 10 homers and 40 RBIs and went 12-1 with a 0.73 ERA and 165 strikeouts for the Class 4A state champs.

RHP: Shaun Anderson, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), Junior
Stepped up late in the season and finished 6-1 with a 0.77 ERA and 74 strikeouts to lead the Patriots to No. 1 in the FAB 50.

RHP: Luke Eubank, Newbury Park (Calif.), Senior
Went 11-0 with a 1.01 ERA, tossing three no-hitters and leading his squad to the CIF Southern Section Division I title.

LHP: Max Fried, Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Calif.), Senior
The first high school pitcher selected in the draft was 8-2 with a 2.02 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 66 innings.

RHP: Lucas Sims, Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.), Senior
Went 8-1 with a 1.19 ERA and 98 K's for Class AAAAA state runner-up and was drafted in the first round by the Braves.

RHP: Nick Travieso, Archbishop McCarthy (Southwest Ranches, Fla.), Senior
First-round pick of the Reds led McCarthy to a state crown, going 8-1 with a 0.76 ERA and 100 strikeouts.


Third Team

C: Jeremy Martinez, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), Junior
The No. 1 player in the ESPN 60 hit .388, committed only two errors, had just one passed ball and threw out six of 10 runners trying to steal.

1B: Kayden Porter, Spanish Fork (Utah), Senior
Went 5-0 with a 1.75 ERA on the mound and hit .400 with 10 homers and 31 RBIs to earn Gatorade State Player of the Year honors.

MIF: Sheldon Neuse, Keller Fossil Ridge (Fort Worth, Texas), Junior
Elite prospect for next year's draft batted .447 this season and is rated No. 10 in the ESPN 60.

MIF: Drew Ward, Leedey (Okla.), Sophomore
Considered the nation's top sophomore, Ward followed up .578 freshman campaign to bat .541 this year despite seeing fewer pitches to hit.

3B: Mitch Nay, Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.), Senior
Hit .380 with 11 homers and 31 RBIs and was named Gatorade State Player of the Year.

OF: Austin Meadows, Grayson (Loganville, Ga.), Junior
No. 2 player in the ESPN 60 and a Clemson commit hit .390 with four homers, 28 RBIs and 19 steals while leading Grayson to the Class AAAAA state semifinals.

OF: Justin Williams, Terrebonne (La.), Junior
No. 6 player in ESPN 60 hit .519 with eight homers, 25 RBIs and a .637 on-base percentage.

OF: Jesse Winker, Olympia (Orlando, Fla.), Senior
Hit .488 with 34 runs scored and 30 RBIs for Titans, who had only one loss this year.

UTL: Trey Ball, New Castle (Ind.), Junior
One of the nation's top juniors went 6-2 with a 1.45 ERA and 75 strikeouts in 53 innings and hit .434 with five homers and 27 RBIs.

UTL: Carson Kelly, Westview (Portland, Ore.), Senior
Two-time Gatorade State Player of the Year went 6-3 with a 1.09 ERA and 80 strikeouts and hit .398 with five homers and 26 RBIs. Selected in the second round by the Cardinals.

RHP: Mitch Brown, Century (Rochester, Minn.), Senior
Second-round pick of the Indians was named Gatorade State Player of the Year after going 8-2 with 134 strikeouts.

LHP: Robert Kaminsky, St. Joseph Regional (Montvale, N.J.), Junior
Gatorade State Player of the Year went 7-2 with a 0.27 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 56 innings, allowing just two earned runs all season.

LHP: Brett Seeburger, Vista (Oceanside, Calif.), Junior
Finished the year 10-1 with a 0.71 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 78.2 innings for the CIF San Diego Section Division I champs.

LHP: Hunter Virant, Camarillo (Calif.), Senior
UCLA commit finished 8-3 with a 0.94 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 66.2 innings.

RHP: Walker Weickel, RHP, Olympia (Orlando, Fla.), Senior
Compensation-round pick of the Padres went 12-1 with a 1.37 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 72 innings.
