Oak Hill continues to impress
Editor's note: The ESPN RISE top 50 boys' basketball rankings are compiled by Christopher Lawlor, Ronnie Flores, Ryan Canner-O'Mealy and Jon Mahoney. They will be released each Tuesday throughout the season.
Only a handful of teams in the ESPN RISE boys' basketball rankings have taken flight. As the weeks progress, the entire nation will have tipped off by mid-December.
No. 5 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) has already rattled off five consecutive victories, including a convincing win over then-No. 35 Veritas Christian (Fletcher, N.C.), which tumbled 10 spots. No one dropped out of the rankings.
This week, No. 1 Duncanville (Texas) gets underway, but the majority of the teams in the top 25 won't play until early December.
Three-point play
Player of the week: Point guard Lamont "MoMo" Jones of Oak Hill Academy netted a game-high 21 points, sinking four 3-pointers, in a 94-48 victory over Veritas Christian on Sunday night at the Asheville Civic Center. Jones, who transferred from American Christian (Aston, Pa.), totaled 48 points in three wins, and recorded nine assists against Patterson School (N.C.).
Game of the week: Tuesday, 8 p.m. ET -- No. 5 Oak Hill Academy at No. 33 Mountain State Academy (Beckley, W.Va.): The Beckley-Raleigh County Civic Center will be filled to capacity with more than 3,000 rabid fans for a matchup between ranked teams. Nebraska-bound forward Vander Joaquim averages 11 rebounds for Mountain State Academy (2-0).
Update: DeMarcus Cousins, a 6-10 power forward, sat out the opening game for No. 11 LeFlore (Mobile, Ala.) against B.C. Rain (Mobile) on Nov. 4. Cousins missed the game with an undisclosed injury. "Nothing major, just a few bumps and bruises," LeFlore coach Otis Hughley said. LeFlore won 72-58, pulling away in the fourth quarter. Cousins, an Alabama-Birmingham recruit, will debut Tuesday against Vigor (Prichard).
Records through Nov. 9.
