Clement to coach prep basketball team
Only three years removed from throwing his last pitch as a major leaguer, Matt Clement already is on the road to a second career.
The 34-year-old Clement, who won 87 games over nine seasons for the San Diego Padres, Florida Marlins, Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox, was hired Monday to be the boys basketball coach at his alma mater, Butler (Pa.) High School.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported the story in its Tuesday editions.
"I'm very excited and honored to get this opportunity, and I don't take this responsibility lightly," Clement said, according to the Post-Gazette. "To coach these kids and lead these kids is something I've always wanted to do."
Clement graduated from Butler, where he played baseball and basketball, in 1993, according to the newspaper. A third-round pick of the Padres, he broke into the big leagues with San Diego in 1998 and went on to pitch in the postseason for the Cubs (2003) and the Red Sox (2005).
Clement won 13 games for the Red Sox that season and was 5-5 with a 6.61 ERA in 12 starts in 2006, his last season in the majors. He won 35 games for the Cubs from 2002-04.
