Olasewere discusses senior season
BELTSVILLE, Md. -- Jamal Olasewere had a great senior season for Springbrook High School (Silver Spring, Md.), and after a prolonged recruiting process, he will try to continue that success at Long Island University.
ESPNRise.com sat down with the 6-foot-5, 210-pound forward to discuss his senior season, recruitment and his goals for LIU.
"We had a great season. To win another 4A state championship, that was like a dream come true," Olasewere said. "I was really happy to make all-met. When you think about all the great players in the D.C. area, that is an honor for sure. It was a great season. Winning it all was such a great thrill for me and the team."
Olasewere averaged 19. 5 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and two steals per game for a Blue Devils team that went 27-0.
Olasewere won all-county and all-met honors. He was the only Montgomery County player selected First Team All-Met by the Washington Post.
Olasewere's recruitment stretched into May of his senior year. He was the last D.C. Area All-Met senior to commit to a college. At one point in early April, it appeared that Olasewere might be headed for local power Georgetown University.
Olasewere eventually committed to Northeast Conference participant LIU in May, selecting LIU over Xavier and Mount St. Mary's.
"It took a while," a smiling Olasewere said. "But in the end I know I wound up choosing the right school for me. That is the important thing. Long Island was the best fit for me. They really want me, and they think I can play a lot right away, maybe start, maybe play 30-35 minutes a game."
Olasewere was primarily a power forward in high school, but has developed a pretty good set of perimeter skills and a nice midrange jump shot. He should not have difficulty moving to the small forward position in college.
"[LIU] recruited me to play the three, which is my natural position, for college," Olasewere said. "That is the position I want to play, and I am working on improving my ballhandling and my footwork and things like that."
Olasewere will report to LIU on Aug. 15, and said he expects to major in computer science.
