Jesuit off to a perfect start

The first week of play in Texas brought about a slew of surprises that helps reshape this week's FAB 50.

League rivals Plano East and Plano West were the big movers after each went 3-0 at the Coppell Invitational. It wasn't so much the quality of the victories, but rather the fact many of the projected Texas frontrunners lost in the first week of tournament play.

A pair of Texas teams got through the weekend unscathed - and unscored upon, and hold the No. 1 and 2 rankings this week. Both Jesuit and Klein won their showcase events with three shutouts.

The one non-Texas surprise this week was Corona del Sol (Ariz.) edged Brophy Prep (Ariz.) on PKs in a battle of title state title contenders.

Results through Jan. 11

Rankings: Preseason / Week: 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9

Rk. School (City, State) Record Prv. Notes
1 Jesuit (Dallas) 3-0-0 1 For the fourth time in the last seven years, Jesuit opened its season by winning the Jesuit Meinster Soccer Classic. Jesuit defeated FAB 50-ranked Lake Highlands and Allen in the semifinal and final rounds, respectively.
2 Klein (Texas) 3-0-0 4 Klein, by virtue of three shutout wins to claim the Klein Showcase, moves to No. 2 this week.
3 La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad, Calif.) 11-0-1 3 LCC was held to a draw by St. Augustine, but it does not cost the team any places in the rankings.
4 Boca Raton (Fla.) 16-0-1 5 Boca Raton checks in at No. 4 this week, but will fall next week since it lost Monday to Palm Beach Central. The weekly FAB 50 rankings only go through Sunday matches each week.
5 Saddleback (Santa Ana, Calif.) 12-0-1 6 Jesus Ayala and Edward Zepeda scored to give Saddleback a 2-1 win over Orange.
6 Wellington (Fla.) 14-0-2 9 Wellington has won nine of its last 10 matches, the lone blemish was a draw with state-ranked American Heritage.
7 Ferguson (Miami) 12-0-2 10 Ferguson is the top-ranked team in the Miami Herald Top 10.
8 El Toro (Lake Forest, Calif.) 13-1-1 12 El Toro's 13 wins leads all Orange County programs.
9 Poway (Calif.) 11-0-3 7 A slew of ties results in a slight drop in the rankings for this undefeated team.
10 Jesuit (New Orleans, La.) 17-0-2 13 Despite a draw last week, Jesuit remains the only undefeated team in Louisiana.
11 Plano West (Plano, Texas) 3-0-0 NR Plano West opened its season with three wins at the Coppell Tournament, however, the team did not have a strong bracket. It matters little, though, as Plano West will soon have to match up with the likes of Dallas Jesuit and Plano East.
12 Plano East (Plano, Texas) 3-0-0 NR Plano East, like Plano West, went perfect over the weekend, but more difficult challenges await this program.
13 San Ramon Valley (Danville, Calif.) 9-0-3 15 San Ramon Valley and De La Salle soon will clash for the first time as league rivals.
14 Killian (Miami) 13-0-4 16 Killian, the No. 3-ranked team in the Miami Herald Top 10, is one of only two undefeated teams in the Miami area.

16 Brophy Prep (Phoenix, Ariz.) 16-2-1 19 Brophy Prep let a 2-0 lead slip away in a shootout setback to Cornoa del Sol.
17 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) 9-1-1 20 De La Salle and Amador Valley played to a draw last week in a meeting of FAB 50 foes.
18 Millikan (Long Beach, Calif.) 15-2-2 22 Millikan fell hard after a pair of loss in December, but is slowly working its way back up the FAB 50 rankings.
19 East Lake (Tarpon Springs, Fla.) 12-0-4 25 East Lake will play for the conference title this week.
20 Orangewood Christian (Maitland, Fla.) 14-0-3 26 Orangewood Christian's title at the Tampa Soccer Classic in December positioned this team for a run at a high national ranking with an undefeated season. So far, so good.
21 Coppell (Texas) 2-1-0 43 Coppell's win over Plano helped move the team into this week's Top 25.
22 Plano ( Texas) 2-1-0 2 Plano lost to Coppell at the Coppell Tournament, but showed it can win without Notre Dame-bound Dylan Powers, who missed a pair of matches - both victories - for national team training.
23 Pajaro Valley (Watsonville, Calif.) 9-1-1 31 Pajaro Valley's claim to fame this season is an early win over Bellarmine Prep.
24 The Woodlands (Texas) 4-0-0 29 The Woodlands posted a 3-0 victory over Westfield to capture the Woodlands Kilt Cup.
25 Lake Highlands (Richardson, Texas) 2-1-0 NR Lake Highlands pushed No. 1 Jesuit before falling 1-0 in the Meinster Classic final. Lake Highland wrapped up tournament play with a consolation match victory over Highland Park.
