2011 POWERADE FAB 50 Boys' Soccer Rankings: Final
RK (LW)SCHOOL (CITY, STATE)RECCOMMENT
1 (1)St. Benedict's Prep
Newark, NJ
24-0Season complete. New Jersey Prep A state champion. The Gray Bees captured their 23rd straight state title with a 4-1 victory over Pennington School in the final. Christiano Francios, a national recruit who will soon make his commitment decision, finished with 43 goals and 22 assists. Cris Hernandez, who is turning pro after the season, added 16 goals and 32 assists. Pablo Perez scored 23 goals. Other key players include Holy Cross commit Diego Ceron and Amherst commit Thomas Bull, who had 18 shutouts in goal. St. Benedict's defeated six teams that are either in or have been in the POWERADE FAB 50 this season. The perfect season included nine wins over state-ranked programs from five states by a combined 45-3 margin. For the season, St. Benedict's scored 135 goals and surrendered six (two on penalty kicks). The team outshot its opponents 494-49 in 24 matches and earned 165 corner kicks while giving up 12.
2 (2)DeMatha Catholic
Hyattsville, MD
20-0Season complete. Washington Catholic Athletic Conference champion. DeMatha rode two early goals and held off Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.) in the second half for a 2-1 victory in the final to cap a second straight perfect season. The Stags have won 44 consecutive matches. This junior-heavy squad was led by the scoring of underclassmen Sean Cowdrey, Chris Odoi Atsem and Danny Brandt. Senior defender Michael Parker anchored a defense that surrendered only eight goals this season. DeMatha's key victory was a shootout win over Jesuit (Carmichael, Calif.) following a 1-1 draw. The Stags also posted regular-season wins over Sidwell Friends (Washington, D.C.) and Episcopal (Alexandria, Va.), a pair of teams that started the season in the POWERADE FAB 50 but dropped out before playing DeMatha.
3 (3)Marquette University
Milwaukee, WI
24-0-1Season complete. Wisconsin Division 1 state champion. Notre Dame commit Patrick Hodan scored three goals as Marquette cruised to a 6-0 state final victory over Kettle Moraine. Hodan finished the season with 45 goals. The Hilltoppers played the nation's most demanding schedule and nearly pulled off a perfect season. The team has wins over Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.), Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.), Lyons (LaGrange, Ill.), Reitz Memorial (Evansville, Ind.), Vianney (St. Louis, Mo.) and Granite Bay (Granite Bay, Calif.). The lone blemish was a 3-3 draw with FAB 50-ranked Jesuit (Carmichael, Calif.). With six starters projected to return in 2012, Marquette will be a state title favorite and a solid preseason POWERADE FAB 50 Top 10 pick.
4 (4)Christian Brothers Academy
Lincroft, NJ
21-0Season complete. New Jersey Non-Public A state champion. Virginia commit Scott Thomsen scored 72 seconds into overtime, carrying Christian Brothers to a 1-0 victory over Delbarton in the state final and capping a perfect season. Thomsen missed much of CBA's playoff run due to a strained quad, but he said nothing was keeping him out of the state final. The victory marks CBA's first state title since 2002. CBA keeper Steve Donato recorded 14 shutouts as CBA outscored its opponents 83-8.
5 (5)Martin Luther King
Manhattan, NY
19-0Season complete. PSAL Class A champion. National recruit Ibrahim Diaby scored in the 69th minute to lift Martin Luther King to a 3-2 victory over FAB 50-ranked Francis Lewis in the final featuring a pair of undefeated programs. The victory marked MLK's 13th PSAL title in the past 16 seasons. Tarek Beckles gave MLK a 1-0 lead and Kerfala Sylla scored for a 2-0 margin before Francis Lewis rallied. MLK posted non-PSAL wins over Catholic High School Athletic Association runner-up St. John the Baptist and New York public school Class AA state semifinalist Newburgh Free Academy.
6 (6)Conestoga
Berwyn, PA
24-0-1Season complete. Pennsylvania Class AAA state champion. T-Ben Donnie's goal early in the second half, which was set up by Andrew Connors and Nick Laganelli, stood as Conestoga defeated Upper St. Clair 1-0 to capture the state title and complete an undefeated season. Incidentally, the last time a school went undefeated in Pennsylvania Class AAA, it was Upper St. Clair in 2004. Conestoga's undefeated season included wins over Central Dauphin, Lower Merion, Strath Haven and Council Rock North (twice) -- all of those teams are either in or have been in the POWERADE FAB 50 this season.
7 (7)Green Hope
Morrisville, NC
25-1Season complete. North Carolina Class 4A state champion. Rodrigo Ortiz helped deliver the perfect ending for coach Andrew Chadwick, scoring an overtime goal that lifted the Falcons to a 2-1 victory over Myers Park in the state final -- the team's second significant come-from-behind victory in the playoffs. Chadwick, in his 10th season, had announced his pending retirement from coaching before the season. He ended up with his first state title in the last match he coached. He steps down with a career record of 185-44-18. Green Hope, which rallied from a 3-0 deficit against Fuquay-Varina in the quarterfinal round for a 4-3 victory, trailed Myers Park until Fraser Murphy's goal tied the match and set up overtime. Junior Kellan Foster was Green Hope's lone all-state honoree. Sophomore Evan Krause, who was injured and did not play in Green Hope's final few matches, has committed to North Carolina.
8 (8)Saint Xavier
Louisville, KY
27-1-1Season complete. Kentucky state champion. Senior Danny Belza had a goal and one assist as St. Xavier defeated Ryle, 3-0, in the state final for the program's eighth title in the last 12 years. The team's top player this year was Xavier commit Neil Henley. St. Xavier ended the sason on a 26-match win streak, which included a victory over perennial Ohio power St. Ignatius. The team's only setback was a 2-1 loss to Louisville Collegiate on Aug. 24 which St. Xavier avenged with a 4-1 playoff win in October.
9 (9)Saint Ignatius
Cleveland, OH
22-1Season complete. Ohio Division I state champion. Junior Jacob Roth had two goals and one assist and Akron commit Matt Foldesy added a goal and two assists as St. Ignatius rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit for a 4-2 state final victory over Olentangy Liberty. The win marked St. Ignatius' third state title in the past four years as the Wildcats have reached the final every year. St. Ignatius won it final 17 games following a loss to St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.) and has won 45 of its last 46 matches. Foldesy ended with a team-best 20 goals. The Wildcats' lineup also featured Indiana-bound defender Zach Martin.
10 (10)Canton
Canton, MI
24-1-2Season complete. Michigan Division 1 state champion. Dan Ovesea's goal from 50 yards out late in the match lifted Canton to a 1-0 victory over Grand Haven for the state title. In the semifinals, Canton knocked off undefeated De La Salle. Canton was No. 13 in the preseason POWERADE FAB 50 but an early loss plus a season-ending injury to a top player knocked the team out of the rankings. Canton then pieced together a 23-match undefeated run to end the season and regain a lofty national ranking. The state title is the first for Canton since 1994 when current Canton coach George Tomasso was the starting goalkeeper. Senior Connor Furgason has committed to Western Michigan. With several key juniors returning next year, Canton again will be a preseason favorite in 2012.
11 (11)Hicksville
Hicksville, NY
18-1-2Season complete. New York Class AA state champion. After years of having a highly successful club team in the city, the high school program now has a title to celebrate, as well. Hicksville capped a stellar postseason run with three straight shutouts of nationally ranked programs to earn the school's first state title since 1979. Lucas Munoz, who celebrated his 17th birthday the day before the state final, scored the lone goal in the team's 1-0 victory over Webster Schroeder. Hicksville defeated defending champ Brentwood 2-0 and former POWERADE FAB 50 No. 11 Shenendehowa 3-0 in the matches leading up to the final. Jimmy Myers, who scored Hicksville's first goal against Shenendehowa, has committed to NJIT. On the local club scene, the Hicksville Strikers advanced to the US Youth Soccer National Championships in 2009 and 2010.
12 (12)Cherokee
Marlton, NJ
25-0-2Season complete. New Jersey Group 4 state champion. Temple commit Mike Ryan scored his 33rd goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner as Cherokee defeated Bridgewater-Raritan 2-1 in the state final. Angelo Dambalas, who assisted Ryan's goal, scored Cherokee's first goal. The victory marked Cherokee's second straight state title. Cherokee defeated traditional power East Brunswick in the semifinals and had a pair of wins over state-ranked Timber Creek.
13 (13)Saint Louis Priory School
Saint Louis, MO
27-0Season complete. Missouri Class 2 state champion. Priory capped its second undefeated season in six seasons with a 2-0 state final victory over Trinity. Priory does not play a grueling schedule like the Class 3 St. Louis powers, but its results are quite telling this year. Priory and Class 3 champ DeSmet had six common opponents. Both beat Oakville 2-0, Burroughs by three goals and had similar results over outmanned Whitfield (Priory winning 8-0, DeSmet winning 8-1), St. Mary's (Priory winning 4-0, DeSmet winning 3-0) and Duchesne (Priory winning 4-3, DeSmet winning 2-0). The defining result was the fact Priory defeated Fort Zumwalt West (2-0), a team that beat DeSmet (3-1). Andrew Rhodes scored a team-high 25 goals for Priory. Jeff Hopson led the team with 19 assists. Senior midfielder Kyle Martin has committed to Xavier.
14 (14)Morton
Cicero, IL
24-3-1Season complete. Illinois Class 3A state champion. Joel Salmeron's goal a little more than a minute into overtime lifted Morton to a 1-0 victory over Naperville Central for the Illinois Class 3A state title. Morton, a state-ranked team most of the season, was in and out of the POWERADE FAB 50 throughout the season. The team's showing in the most grueling of the fall playoff formats earns it a spot in the final Top 25. Alonzo Torres led the team with 18 goals on the season. Jeses Morales added 17 goals and 12 assists.
15 (15)Salesianum School
Wilmington, DE
17-1-1Season complete. Delaware state champion. Moja Hale's goal late in the second overtime lifted Salesianum to a 3-2 victory over St. Mark's and the program's eighth state title in the past 10 years -- 11th crown overall. Hale's goal, however, would not have been possible had it not been for Cameron Granger's last-second score in regulation that knotted the match at 2 and set up overtime. Salesianum's only loss this year was a setback to No. 1 St. Benedict's (Newark, N.J.).
16 (16)De Smet Jesuit
Saint Louis, MO
28-4-1Season complete. Missouri Class 3 state champion. DeSmet used a pair of first-half goals from Ohio State commit Louis Berra and Scott Ladi to defeat Oakville 2-0 in the state final. The title marked DeSmet's fifth title under long-time coach Greg Vitello, yet the first since 1997. DeSmet posted at least one win over every Metro Catholic Conference power (each of them usually makes at least a token appearance in the FAB 50 every season). DeSmet also posted wins over Edwardsville (Edwardsville, Ill.) and Ballard (Louisville, Ky.), which both made early season and short-lived appearances in the national rankings.
17 (17)De La Salle Collegiate
Warren, MI
21-1-4Season complete. Michigan Division 1 state semifinalist. After knocking off undefeated Eisenhower to reach the state semifinals, De La Salle was dealt a 1-0 setback by eventual state champion Canton. Junior forward Mike Leone was named to the Michigan soccer coaches Dream Team. Seniors Michael Moscone and Nicholas Orlando were Division 1 second-team honorees.
18 (18)Northwest
Wichita, KS
21-0Season complete. Kansas Class 6A state champion. After nearly a decade of Kansas City area dominance in the large-school bracket, Wichita Northwest became the second non-K.C.-area 6A champ in three years. The Grizzlies capped a perfect season in dramatic fashion with a game-ending penalty kick for a 1-0 victory over Olathe South. The winning play started with a Northwest corner kick in the closing seconds of the match. The ball was played toward the Olathe South goal where a defender was called for a hand ball violation as the clock expired. The officials put two seconds on the clock, and David Lucio's penalty kick hit the crossbar before crossing the line for the winning score and the program's first state title since 1995. Senior Austin Clifton finished with 28 goals.
19 (19)Myers Park
Charlotte, NC
22-3-1Season complete. North Carolina Class 4A state runner-up. In perhaps the most dramatic finish this fall, Myers Park was on the short end of a 2-1 overtime loss to Green Hope in the state final. Diego Suarez placed a bicycle kick on the goal for the apparent tying score as time expired. However, the goal was disallowed as officials ruled that time expired before the ball crossed the goal line. Suarez scored Myers Park's lone goal, at the time giving the team a 1-0 lead. The result marks Myers Park's second straight state runner-up finish. Suarez, junior forward Hussein Ali and senior forward Erick Suarez were named to the coaches all-state team.
20 (20)Eldorado
Albuquerque, NM
18-3Season complete. New Mexico Class AAAAA state champion. Eldorado was a preseason top 20 program and lived up to the hype with a state title over perennial New Mexico power and league rival La Cueva. Sophomore Corey Carabajal led all Class 5A players with 21 goals. Senior Brad Carabajal was named the Class 5A state player of the year and was one of four Eldorado players selected to the all-state first team, along with Corey Carabajal, senior Deven Mason (Virginia Tech) and junior keeper Nate Williard. Seniors Austin Duran and Travis Shepherd were second-team picks.
21 (21)McDonogh School
Owings Mills, MD
18-2-1Season complete. MIAA A Champion. Matt Linardi's overtime goal carried McDonogh to a 1-0 victory over Gilman in the MIAA A final. The result marked McDonogh's third title in five years as the program was making its 13th final appearance in the past 14 years. The team's leading scorer this year was Mike Gamble, who has committed to Wake Forest. McDonogh also featured Denver commit Malcolm Harris.
22 (22)Montgomery
Santa Rosa, CA
21-3-3Season complete. CIF North Coast Section Division I champion. Diego Lopez scored twice in the first 22 minutes, and Montgomery held on for a 2-0 victory over Tamalpais for the program's second straight section title. The result, coupled with Davis' win in the CIF Sac Joaquin Division I final, vaulted Montgomery to No. 1 in the ESPNHS California state rankings. Montgomery defeated Davis early in the season in a non-league match.
23 (23)Francis Lewis
Queens, NY
18-1Season complete. PSAL Class A runner-up. For the third time in the last five years, Francis Lewis' season ended in a playoff loss to Martin Luther King. This one, however, ended Francis Lewis' perfect season. After falling behind 2-0, Francis Lewis rallied to tie the match before losing 3-2. Lewis gave MLK, the POWERADE FAB 50 No. 5 team, its strongest challenge of the season. Lewis was led by Daniel Bedoya, who is rumored to be turning pro after the school year ends.
24 (24)Davis Senior
Davis, CA
18-2-4Season complete. CIF Sac-Joaquin Division I champion. Davis claimed its first section title since 2007 with a shootout win over Jesuit in the title match following a 2-2 draw through regulation and overtime. Davis keeper Derek Pleasants made a key save in the shootout. During the regular season, Davis tied Jesuit, tied Division II runner-up Granite Bay and suffered a defeat to Montgomery.
25 (25)Jesuit
Carmichael, CA
24-2-4Season complete. CIF Sac-Joaquin Division I runner-up. Jesuit lost to Davis on penalty kicks following a 2-2 draw in the section final. Both of Jesuit's losses this year were on penalty kicks: Davis and No. 2 DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.). The team also tied No. 3 Marquette (Milwaukee, Wis.) and beat Granite Bay. Jesuit started the year as the preseason No. 1 team, but was hit hard by injuries and club-mandated defections that cost the team nearly half of its starting line-up and its top ranking by late September. Miguel DeSousa led the team with 26 goals. Seattle commit Jeff Rose finished as the team's leader in assists with 19, despite playing only seven games before a season-ending ACL injury.
