POWERADE FAB 50 Rankings: Final

| Year: | |
| Week: | |
The winter-playing states are: Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
Rankings reflect matches played through Sunday, April 22 -- 2012 FINAL.
There could not have been a more fitting end to the high school season than Sharyland (Mission, Texas) winning the Texas Class 5A state final.
With the historically strong California and Texas schools devoid of their Development Academy performers, the year was full of surprises -- and Sharyland capped that run. Heading into the Texas state semifinals, three of the four teams were ranked in the POWERADE FAB 50. Sharyland was not, yet emerged as the champion. The title earned Sharyland a No. 10 final ranking in a year where Florida teams dominated the scene.
Cypress Bay (Weston, Fla.) finishes at No. 1, followed by Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.) and Boca Raton (Fla.). Cypress Bay and Boca Raton benefitted from having their Academy players still eligible for high school soccer. Montverde, meanwhile, is sending eight players to NCAA Division I programs -- that's more than Hawaii, Louisiana and Mississippi combined.
Looking ahead to the Class 2012-13 season, Boca Raton and Montverde again will be among the FAB 50 preseason favorites, along with Paramount (Calif.).

| 1 (1) | Cypress Bay Weston, FL | 23-0-2 | Season complete. Florida Class 5A state champion. Cypress Bay ran right past Mandarin in the state final and into the record books. The quick-strike Lightning scored twice in the first 20 minutes and two more times in the final 20 in a 4-1 state final victory in which the outcome was never in doubt. Junior Daniel Jensen, who has scored 12 goals in 13 US Soccer Development Academy matches, netted a pair of goals in the state final. Stony Brook signee Martin Giordano and junior Javier Clavijo, both Academy starters, scored the other goals. The Lightning played the final without Central Florida goalkeeper commit Zach Biggs, who was serving the second of a two-match red-card suspension. Cypress Bay became only the fourth school to defend its large-school state title in Florida soccer history. In addition, coach Johnny Ramos claimed his fifth state title, three at American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) and two with Cypress Bay. |
| 2 (2) | Montverde Academy Montverde, FL | 23-0-4 | Season complete. Montverde Academy completed a second straight undefeated season, and in the process extended its undefeated streak to a national-best 52 matches. The team went 10-0-4 against teams that have appeared in the POWERADE FAB 50. Eight Montverde seniors have commited to NCAA Division I programs: David Graydon, Donte Brangman and Jair Minors to St. Louis University, Alex Anyaegbunam, Joao Ramalho and Henrique Novaes to East Tennessee State, Luis Fernando Vega to Florida Gulf Coast University and Juan Jose Morales to Mercer. Morales finished with a team-best 32 goals despite sustaining a season-ending injury late in the season. Graydon led the squad with 18 assists. Montverde Academy outscored its opponents 114-12. |
| 3 (4) | Boca Raton Community Boca Raton, FL | 20-2-4 | Season complete. Florida Class 5A state semifinalist. Boca Raton's season ended with a 3-1 loss to Cypress Bay in the state semifinals, a team it tied earlier in the season. With nine starters projected to return next year, Boca Raton likely will be the preseason Class 5A favorite and a high-ranked team in the POWERADE FAB 50. Junior midfielder Hunter Bandy was the Sun-Sentinel Palm Player of the Year. Junior midfielders Nico Midttun and Giovanni DeMauro, junior keeper Brian Kilgallon and junior defender Gilmar Rodrigues were first-team all-area selections. |
| 4 (5) | Paramount Paramount, CA | 25-4-3 | Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division I champion. Southern Section Division 3 champion. For the second time in three years Paramount has won the SCR title, which brings together champions from the Central, Los Angeles, San Diego and Southern sections. In the final, Jesus Alvarez and Miguel Rueda scored goals to carry Paramount past previously undefeated Crescenta Valley 2-1. Paramount is 21-1 over the past three years in postseason play, which includes three straight Southern Section titles, making the Pirates only the third school to ever pull off a 3-peat in the Southern Section. Senior defender Tommy Osorio was named the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 Player of the Year. Senior midfielder Jose Ochoa and junior midfielder Frankie Perez were first-team selections. |
| 5 (6) | Crescenta Valley La Crescenta, CA | 26-1-6 | Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division I runner-up. Southern Section Division 4 champion. Crescenta Valley's bid for an undefeated season ended with a 2-1 regional final loss to Paramount. Crescenta Valley fell behind 2-0 early in the first half and got one goal back late in the contest. En route to the regional final, Crescenta Valley defeated Central Section Division I champion Buchanan and Southern Section Division 1 champion Millikan. Senior midfielder Alex Berger was named the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 Player of the Year. Senior forward Pavle Atanackovic (UC Irvine), senior midfielder Salar Hajimirsadeghi and senior keeper Nick Ruiz were first-team selections. |
| 6 (7) | Millikan Long Beach, CA | 28-3-3 | Season complete. CIF Southern Regional semifinalist. Southern Section Division 1 champion. Millikan's dazzling postseason run that featured 13 goals in 175 minutes of action, was brought to a halt in a 2-1 loss to Crescenta Valley in the regional semifinals. Before that match, Millikan scored twice in the final 15 minutes against Loyola in what ended up being a shootout victory. Millikan then beat Ventura 7-2 for the section title and handled La Costa Canyon 4-1 in the regional quarterfinals. Senior forward Luis Cervantes was named the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 Player of the Year. Senior keeper Steven Barrera and senior midfielder Hugo Gonzalez were first-team selections. |
| 7 (8) | Jesuit New Orleans, LA | 28-1-4 | Season complete. Louisiana Division I state champion. Charles Mansour scored twice in the final 10 minutes to rally Jesuit to a 3-2 victory over St. Paul's in the state final. Jesuit and St. Paul's have met in the final the past two years, splitting those meetings. Jesuit's lone setback was a penalty kick loss to Brother Martin, a team it later defeated twice. Jesuit also had two ties with POWERADE FAB 50-ranked Ocean Springs (Miss.) and one with St. Louis Catholic. Jesuit had two wins over St. Thomas More. Overall, Jesuit went 5-1-3 against ranked programs. |
| 8 (9) | Hamilton Chandler, AZ | 23-3 | Season complete. Arizona Division I state champion. Hamilton claimed its first-ever state title with a 2-1 victory over Brophy College Prep in a match that went four overtime sessions. Hamilton, playing in its third straight state final, trailed 1-0 late in the second half before junior Jordan Fletcher scored to knot the contest at 1. The match went through two 10-minute overtime sessions, then with 3:26 left in the second five-minute golden goal session, Fletcher converted the winner. Hamilton had lost to Brophy during the semifinals of the Arizona Soccer Showcase, the same event in which the Huskies defeated California power Servite. Senior keeper Kiyan Pirgheybi, who finished with 17 shutouts, and senior forward Daniel Arruba, who scored a school-record 39 goals, were named to the Arizona Republic All-Arizona team. Junior defender Nolan Barth was a first-team all-Division I selection. Junior midfielder Luis Manta and junior defender Daniel Wichman were honorable mention selections. |
| 9 (10) | Brophy Prep School Phoenix, AZ | 20-3-1 | Season complete. Arizona Division I state runner-up. Brophy Prep was less than 11 minutes away from a second straight state title, but ended up on the losing end of a 2-1 decision in four overtimes to Hamilton. Virginia commit Riggs Lennon scored his 51st goal of the season, which was the only match until 10:26 left in regulation. Brophy keeper Nate Sundermeier turned away several Hamilton chances to keep Brophy close throughout the second half and overtime. During the season, Brophy won the Arizona Soccer Showcase and placed third at the Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament in Florida. Lennon, a junior, was named the Arizona Republic Big School Player of the Year for the second straight season. Senior defender Tyler McGehee was named to the All-Arizona Team, along with Lennon. Sundermeier was a second-team Division I selection. Junior defender Clarence Clark and junior midfielder Ryan Grotjohn were honorable mention picks. |
| 10 (NR) | Sharyland Mission, TX | 17-3 | Season complete. Texas Class 5A state champion. Jesus Olivares scored the match-tying goal in regulation, then the shootout-tying goal, setting up Sharyland's dramatic win over Morton Ranch in the Texas state final after a 2-2 regulation tie. Olivares was named the all-tournament MVP. Sharyland's overall record ended up as 32-3-3, but the team's official record reflects only full matches played -- not the series of mini-matches that teams from Sharyland's area early in the season. Juniors Gilberto Alaniz and Daniel Garcia and sophomore Amaury Lozano were named to the all-tournament team. |
| 11 (12) | Fleming Island Orange Park, FL | 25-1 | Season complete. Florida Class 4A state champion. Cameron McCurry, who is headed to Villanova on a football scholarship, proved to be the star in another type of football, netting the match-winning goal in the state final. McCurry's header in the fourth minute of overtime lifted Fleming Island to a 2-1 victory over Seminole for the school's first state title. Fleming Island trailed in the match until Brandon Behr, the team's leading scorer, tied the match in the 70th minute. |
| 12 (13) | Loyola Los Angeles, CA | 22-4-6 | Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division 1 semifinalist. Loyola might have the feeling that this was one title that got away from the Cubs. Loyola led Millikan 2-0 until the closing minutes of their section semifinal match but conceded two goals and eventually lost in a shootout, and Millikan went on to an easy final victory. Loyola, the Mission League champ, was a runner-up to Paramount at the Golden Gate tournament in December, where the team handed Watsonville its lone loss of the season. |
| 13 (14) | Watsonville Watsonville, CA | 18-1-2 | Season complete. CIF Central Coast Section Division I champion. Senior Jose Flores scored two goals and assisted on another as Watsonville defeated Menlo-Atherton 3-1 in the section final. For Watsonville, the result marked a ninth section crown, which came during a season that it won a staggering 32nd league title. It ended up being a bizarre season for this storied program as Watsonville traveled to Hawaii for a tournament, but upon arriving found that the teams had not been sanctioned and thus spent the trip practicing. Watsonville's lone loss was to Southern Section power Loyola at the Golden Gate Invitational. |
| 14 (11) | Morton Ranch Katy, TX | 20-4-6 | Season complete. Texas Class 5A state runner-up. After handling FAB 50-ranked Westlake 4-1 in the state semifinals, Morton Ranch lost the final in a shootout, following a 2-2 draw. Morton Ranch had three shootout attempts that would have won the contest, but all three missed, allowing Sharyland to rally. Seniors Omar Acosta, Jonathan Barragan and Jeremie Batiste were named to the all-tournament team. |
| 15 (15) | Monarch Coconut Creek, FL | 18-3-4 | Season complete. Florida Class 5A regional runner-up. After knocking off St. Thomas Aquinas in the regional semifinals, Monarch was handed a 4-0 loss by Boca Raton. The lopsided setback brought an end to a season that saw Monarch tie top-ranked Cypress Bay and win the District 11-5A regular season and tournament titles. Senior midfielder Cesar Ballesteros, senior defender Aleph Franzin and junior keeper Rafael DeJesus were first-team Sun-Sentinel Broward honorees. |
| 16 (16) | Saint Thomas Aquinas School Fort Lauderdale, FL | 19-2 | Season complete. Florida Class 5A regional semifinalist. Under a new head coach, St. Thomas Aquinas carried on its winning ways before falling to Monarch in penalty kicks in the regional playoffs. The highlight for Aquinas this season was a 4-1 victory over state-ranked American Heritage-Delray. Sophomore standouts Mario DaSilva, who had 23 goals, and Jack Miskel, who had 14 goals and 15 assists, were named to the Sun-Sentinel Broward first team. |
| 17 (17) | Pico Rivera-El Rancho Pico Rivera, CA | 26-1 | Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division 4 runner-up. El Rancho's undefeated run ended at 34 matches following a 3-0 setback to Crescenta Valley in the section final. The loss prevented El Rancho from advancing to the regional tournament. However, Crescenta Valley's strong regional showing -- by taking out the Central Section and Southern Section Division 1 champs -- makes El Rancho look even better. Senior forward Francisco Lara, senior defender Efrain Velasco and junior midfielder Cristian Roldan were CIF-Southern Section Division 4 first-team honorees. |
| 18 (18) | De La Salle Concord, CA | 22-3-2 | Season complete. CIF North Coast Section Division I champion. After a rocky start to its season, De La Salle ended the year on an 18-0-1 run, which included a 2-0 victory over San Ramon Valley in the section final for the program's fourth straight title. Carlo Eikani and Evan Molineux scored the team's goals to give first-year head coach Derricke Brown his first title. |
| 19 (19) | Elsik Houston, TX | 21-2-1 | Season complete. Texas Class 5A Area finalist. Elsik's early playoff exit to Morton Ranch didn't look to bad considering Morton Ranch finished as the Texas 5A state runner-up. Elsik's breakout season included a win over perennial state power and Top 25-ranked Klein. The team's high-powered offense was led by scoring sensation Kayode George, who ended with 38 goals. |
| 20 (20) | Saint Pauls School Covington, LA | 28-2-2 | Season complete. Louisiana Division I state runner-up. St. Paul's bid for a second straight state title ended with a 3-2 loss to New Orleans Jesuit. St. Paul's held a 2-1 lead until the final 10 minutes of the match. Seth Hogan and Andrew McInnis scored the goals for St. Paul's. St. Paul's lone regular-season loss was to Brother Martin, a team St. Paul's defeated once in the regular season and again in the state semifinals. Overall, St. Paul's went 3-2-1 against teams in the POWERADE FAB 50. |
| 21 (21) | Torrey Pines Encinitas, CA | 22-6-3 | Season complete. CIF Southern Regional Division I semifinalist. San Diego Section Division I champion. Torrey Pines pushed Paramount to penalty kicks before falling in the regional semifinals. Along the way, Torrey Pines defeated Poway and San Pasqual to win the San Diego Division I crown and edged Southern Section Division 2 champ Valley View on penalty kicks to reach the regional semifinals. |
| 22 (22) | San Pasqual Escondido, CA | 20-2-1 | Season complete. CIF San Diego Section Division I runner-up. San Pasqual, which spent almost the entire year ranked No. 1 among San Diego schools, was upset by Torrey Pines on penalty kicks in the section final. San Pasqual was unable to secure an at-large bid to the regional tournament, thus bringing its season to an earlier-than-expected end. |
| 23 (23) | Ventura Ventura, CA | 24-1-7 | Season complete. CIF Southern Section Division 1 runner-up. Ventura's 31-match undefeated run ended with a 7-2 loss to No. 5 Millikan in the section semifinal. The game was tied at 1 until Millikan rolled off three goals in a 16-minute window to turn the contest into a one-sided affair. While the final result was not pretty, Ventura -- which projects seven starters to return next season -- had a strong postseason performance, defeating South Coast champ San Clemente and Sunset champ Marina (which had defeated Trinity champ and top-seeded Servite). |
| 24 (3) | Westlake Austin, TX | 25-2-1 | Season complete. Texas Class 5A state semifinalist. Westlake's season ended with a 4-1 loss to Morton Ranch in the state semifinals. On the state to the state semifinals, Westlake knocked off FAB 50-ranked Klein and Dallas Jesuit. Seniors Ryder McGough and Walker Hume were named to the all-tournament team. |
| 25 (24) | Klein Klein, TX | 20-2-4 | Season complete. Texas Class 5A regional quarterfinalist. Klein's 20-match undefeated run ended in a 1-0 loss to Westlake in the regional quarterfinals. Klein's only setbacks this season were to Elsik and Westlake. |
