Combine tour reaches Bay Area
Staley (Kansas City, Mo.) QB Trent Hosick aims to shine in Oakland
OAKLAND, Calif. -- The 2012 Nike Football SPARQ Combine tour returns to the Golden State on Saturday for the 14th Nike Football combine of the year at Laney College in Oakland, Calif.
It's not often that a quarterback is the potential headliner at a Nike Combine, but then again, Staley (Kansas City, Mo.) standout and Missouri-bound signal-caller Trent Hosick is not your ordinary quarterback.
The 6-1, 225 pound Hosick led Staley to a perfect 14-0 and Class 5 state title last fall, passing for 1,442 yards and 10 scores while also rushing for 2,403 yards and 31 touchdowns. His athletic ability first emerged last spring at the Dallas Nike combine, where he posted a 112.89 SPARQ Rating.
"I'm extremely excited about going to Oakland this weekend," said Hosick. "I have been training tirelessly since the end of wrestling season and feel at the top of my game athletically. My goal is to knock out anything over a 125 in the SPARQ Rating and when I do, I know I will make Staley and MIzzou very excited about the upcoming season."
Giving Hosick some competition for the top rating should be Mission Oak (Tulare, Calif.) linebacker Kevin Palma, who posted a 118.77 SPARQ rating back at the Long Beach Nike Combine in late March. The 6-2, 236 pound Palma has added offers from Oregon State and San Diego State to Nevada since that outing, and currently has the top SPARQ Rating of any linebacker tested on the '12 Nike Combine tour.
Other top athletes to keep an eye out for on Saturday include Oak Grove (San Jose, Calif.) DB Chidobe Awuzie, who holds offers from Washington State and San Diego State, Arizona-bound DB Darius Allensworth out of Heritage (Brentwood, Calif.) and Centennial (Peoria, Ariz.) ATH Jalen Ortiz, who's been offered by more than a half dozen Pac-12 schools.
