Byrnes plummets in rankings after loss
Editor's note: ESPN will release the ESPN RISE FAB 50 national football rankings to start each week of the regular season. The rankings combine three previously independent polls and are compiled by a panel of voters, including Doug Huff (Wheeling, W. Va.); Jon Mahoney (Brooklyn, N.Y.); Sheldon Shealer (Myersville, Md.); Brian Stumpf (Torrance, Calif.) and Mark Tennis
(Stockton, Calif.). Kynon Codrington, Christopher Lawlor, Mike Loveday, Bob Masajo and Paul Muyskens also contributed to the poll.
A player named Ash helped burn any hopes that the Byrnes High football team of Duncan, S.C., had of being considered the nation's No. 1 squad for the 2008 season.
The South Carolina team was No. 5 in last week's ESPN RISE FAB 50 national poll, but was No. 1 elsewhere. On Saturday against Dorman of Roebuck, S.C., a team that is no stranger to success in the Palmetto State, Byrnes not only was upset but at one point trailed 35-7 before suffering a 35-28 defeat.
Dorman led at halftime in each of the team's previous two meetings, but lost the leads in each of those games. Byrnes scored three times in the game's final 14 minutes to cut into the 35-7 lead Dorman had built through three quarters. Dorman then went for it on 4-and-1 from the 42-yard line with less than a minute to go in the game. Quarterback Walt Canty got the first down to seal the win.
The player named Ash was senior running back Ash Butler. He scored on runs of 72, 68 and 10 yards and finished with 23 carries for 190 yards.
With the loss, Byrnes dropped to No. 33 in this week's FAB 50 while Dorman was jumped up to No. 24.
In addition to Dorman, there was only one other new team in this week's FAB 50, which turned out to be unbeaten Naperville North from Illinois.Click here for full Week 9 breakdown.
