Elite 11 QBs tune up for postseason
How are the nation's top high school quarterbacks progressing? Each week, ESPN RISE will track the performances of the 12 QBs who attended the 2008 Elite 11 quarterback event.
Results based on games through Oct. 25 (QBs listed in alphabetical order).
HOW THEY FARED LAST WEEK:
Tajh Boyd -- Phoebus (Hampton, Va.)
There was more drama surrounding Boyd's official visit to Tennessee and rumors of a pending commitment than there was in Friday night's contest against Kecoughtan, a 48-0 rout for the Phantoms. Boyd passed for 147 yards and two scores in the win.
Next game: Nov. 1 at Denbigh
Richard Brehaut -- Los Osos (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.)
Los Osos' televised showdown with undefeated Upland and Stanford-bound QB Josh Nunes went the Grizzlies' way again, as Brehaut passed for 168 yards and two touchdowns while he also ran for a third score in a 41-28 win. Los Osos has no time to gloat as Rancho Cucamonga, which beat the Grizzlies last year, visits this week.
Next game: Oct. 31 vs. Rancho Cucamonga
Allan Bridgford -- Mission Viejo (Mission Viejo, Calif.)
Bridgford hit 19 of 23 passes for 229 yards and four scores as Mission Viejo bounced back from its first loss last week with a resounding 59-7 rout of Aliso Viejo. The Diablos take on rival San Clemente this week.
Next game: Oct. 31 vs. San Clemente
Raymond Cotton -- Meade (Fort Meade, Md.)
Cotton accounted for over 300 yards of offense and three touchdowns, but it wasn't quite enough, as Meade's comeback attempt fell short at Annapolis 25-21. Cotton passed for 192 yards and a TD while rushing for another 119 yards and two scores.
Next game: Oct. 31 at Broadneck
Garrett Gilbert -- Lake Travis (Austin, Texas)
Gilbert and the Cavs were idle this past week, getting extra time to prepare for Friday's clash with undefeated Dripping Springs.
Next game: Oct. 31 vs. Dripping Springs
Andrew Maxwell -- Midland (Midland, Mich.)
College: Michigan State
Maxwell and Midland wrapped up the regular season with a 35-8 win over rival Midland Dow and open playoff action this week against Saginaw Arthur Hill. Maxwell passed for 113 yards and a TD while also scoring on a 1-yard sneak in the win.
Next game: Oct. 31 vs. Arthur Hill (1st round playoffs)
A.J. McCarron -- St. Paul's Episcopal (Mobile, Ala.)
McCarron completed 7 of 12 passes for 112 yards and a score as St. Paul's snapped a four-game losing streak with a 15-0 win over Escambia County on Friday night. The Saints battle UMS-Wright this week in the regular-season finale.
Next game: Oct. 31 vs. UMS-Wright
Zach Mettenberger -- Oconee County (Watkinsville, Ga.)
Eastside's pass rush and team speed were way too much for Oconee to handle, as the Warriors were routed 49-7. Mettenberger managed to throw for 162 yards and a late score in the loss, but was sacked and pressured relentlessly all game long.
Next game: Oct. 31 at Jackson County
Renner returned to action after missing a game with a shoulder injury and didn't miss a beat, completing 19 of 28 passes for 327 yards and four scores while rushing for another touchdown as West Springfield topped Lake Braddock 41-20.
Next game: Oct. 31 vs. Springfield Lee
Tom Savage -- Cardinal O'Hara (Springfield, Pa.)
Savage and O'Hara continue to miss junior running back Corey Brown, who's out with a knee injury, as the Lions were shut out for a second straight week, 13-0, by Father Judge. Savage passed for 87 yards, completing 10 of 20 passes in the loss.
Next game: Oct. 31 vs. LaSalle
Eugene Smith -- Miramar (Miramar, Fla.)
The Patriots took down undefeated Everglades 28-24, in a big Miramar city showdown. Smith hit 19 of 29 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, as Miramar continues to steam toward the 6A playoffs.
