Loyola finishes atop private school rankings
Loyola completed its mission with a 35-0 victory over Calvert Hall on Thanksgiving Day, securing the No. 1 spot among the state's private schools.
Now, it's the public schools' turn.
This week's state finals at M&T Bank Stadium feature No. 1 vs. No. 2 meetings in all four classifications.
The only surprise going into the final week is season-long 3A No. 1 Seneca Valley loss to Westlake in overtime in the state semifinals. Westlake and Wilde Lake -- in Doug DuVall's final game as coach -- will meet in the 3A final on Thursday.
Sherwood and Linganore, a pair of undefeated squads, will square off in Friday's 4A state final.
Two-time defending champ Dunbar meets Fort Hill in the 1A final and a clash between undefeateds River Hill and Eastern Tech play in the 2A final on Saturday.
River Hill has a chance to finish No. 1 in Maryland if it repeats as state champion. The Hawks are the top-ranked team in the Baltimore Sun and the highest-ranking Maryland squad in the Washington Post Top 20. Loyola, however, can make a strong claim for No. 1 consideration with its perfect run through the MIAA, which included a win over Gilman, a team that beat DeMatha early in the season.
