Game of the Week:

Maryland High School Football Scoreboard

Every week, MDVarsity.com will update scores from games throughout the state. Here are each week's results.

Suitland vs. Wise, Saturday at Largo, 8 p.m.: The showcase contest of the Nick Lynch Football Classic pits the preseason media state poll No. 8 Suitland against No. 9 Wise. This will be the first time Suitland takes the field in a regular-season contest without Nick Lynch as head coach since 1995. Lynch passed away in a vehicle accident Dec. 31, 2008. Wise was the P.G. surprise last year, finishing fourth in the region standings before sweeping the regional contests and making a state semifinal contest. Suitland and Wise are considered legitimate state title threats in 2009. Although the game is slated for an 8 p.m. start, it follows the 6 p.m. clash between McDonough and Potomac in this two-game classic.

Best Match-up: Arundel at Old Mill, Friday, 6 p.m.: This Week 2 clash from last year is now the season-opener for 2009 and 2010. Last year Old Mill posted an eye-opening 34-19 victory over Arundel en route to a 9-1 regular season. However, it was Arundel that got the last laugh as it won its next 10 games and reached the state semifinals while Old Mill was bumped in the region semifinals. This year's contest features the high-powered Arundel offense led by Kansas State-bound quarterback Billy Cosh against Old Mill's stable of athletes, which includes Josh Furman and Jason Clements.

Most Important Match-up: Seneca Valley at Clarksburg, Friday, 6:30 p.m.: It might be a little overdramatic to claim any Week 1 match-up as a must-win contest, but in this case, that title fits. Seneca Valley and Clarksburg are part of a loaded Class 3A West, which also features Linganore, Quince Orchard and Damascus – all teams that have made state final appearance in the last two years. The winner of Friday's Seneca Valley-Clarksburg match-up certainly will have an advantage in claiming one of the four playoff spots in a region with seven legitimate playoff contenders. The loser will have an uphill climb back into the playoff race. Last year, Seneca Valley and Clarksburg both went 10-0 in the regular season, yet both teams have graduated the core players the led to such impressive records.

Star Power Match-up: Good Counsel at Valhalla (El Cajon, Calif.), Friday, 10 p.m.: Talk about a star-studded match-up, WCAC runner-up Good Counsel visits CIF-San Diego Section runner-up Valhalla. Valhalla quarterback Pete Thomas has committed to Arizona State and he will be throwing against a Good Counsel secondary that includes Virginia commit E.J. Scott, Wisconsin commit Frank Tamakloe and Division I recruit Louis Young. The game starts at 7 p.m. in California on Friday.
