MDVarsity.com Football Media State Poll
With so much of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference hype rightly focused on DeMatha and Good Counsel, the league's other Maryland member -- Bishop McNamara -- has gone largely unnoticed.
Well, until this week.
The Mustangs, off to a 5-1 start, crack the media state poll Top 25 -- at No. 24 -- for the second time this season and it could be for good this time. McNamara made a brief appearance at 4-0, prior to its game with Good Counsel. That appearance marked the first time McNamara had been ranked since 2001. This past week, McNamara defeated St. John's (D.C.) 38-35. The lone blemish on the team's record was a 21-7 setback to No. 3 Good Counsel.
Bishop McNamara's credits include wins over St. Albans, D.C. (which beat perennial 1A contender Allegany), Gonzaga, D.C. (which defeated Georgetown Prep) and St. John's, D.C. (which defeated Calvert Hall). The victory over St. John's was particularly noteworthy given Calvert Hall's win over Gilman this past weekend.
In keeping with the private school theme this week, undefeated Archbishop Spalding returns to the Top 25 -- at No. 25 -- for the first time since its perfect season of 2006. The pivotal result for Spalding was its early season victory over Calvert Hall, giving the MIAA B Conference a rare victory over an A Conference team.
Gilman and Thomas Johnson fell from the rankings following losses this week.
The Gilman result, coupled with Loyola's loss to McDonogh, led to a slight reshuffling of teams ranked Nos. 6 through 10. River Hill, which owns the state's longest active win streak at 34 games, jumps from No. 8 to No. 6 while Quince Orchard remains at No. 7 following an overtime victory. Sherwood, Fort Hill and Suitland each advance two spots to check in at Nos. 8, 9 and 10, respectively.

The poll is based on a statewide voting of sports reporters. The 2009 season marks the 20th year of the official media state poll in Maryland.
