-- Mike Loveday

Catoctin used an 18 point first quarter in which it scored three touchdowns before Joppatowne held the ball and the Cougar defense used a bend-but-not-break style to keep the Mariners out of the end zone in the second half.

Quarterback Dylan May threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Paul Barbour to get the scoring started with 8:49 left in the first quarter.

Forty-nine seconds later after Catoctin recovered and onside kick, Eric Barbour ran for a 7-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 12-0.

Joppatowne muffed the kickoff and Catoctin recovered on the Mariners 27-yard line. Nick Maxey capped the drive with a four-yard touchdown run to give the Cougars an 18-0 lead, which they never relinquished.

May threw for 158 yards and three touchdowns and Nick Nowaczyk had four catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.

After a first half in which the two teams combined to score 36 points, the scoring pace slowed in a third quarter that saw Joppatowne possess the ball for more than 10 minutes, but fail to score any points.

Catoctin added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to seal the victory and bring the Cougars their first state championship in school history.

Big Play May

May accounted for some of the biggest plays in the game. The senior quarterback who lost his starting job during his junior season, had touchdown passes of 73, 12 and six and added a 55-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to set up the Cougars final touchdown of the game.
