POWERADE FAB 50 Rankings: Week 5

After games ending Sept. 25
There were two major developments at the very top and at the very bottom of this week's POWERADE FAB 50.
At the top, in the aftermath of the team's impressive 30-6 victory this past Friday over previous No. 3 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.), No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) received one first-place vote and edged closer to No. 1 Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) among the FAB 50 panelists.
While it remains highly unlikely that Don Bosco Prep would lose its top ranking if the Ironmen continue to win, the first-place vote for the Raiders signifies that a healthy debate could be in the mix if both teams were to run the table with perfect records and win state titles.
At the bottom, the big news is the addition of No. 50 Valdosta (Valdosta, Ga.). The Wildcats, who first grabbed the attention of voters after they defeated Lincoln (Tallahassee, Fla.) 10-7 and knocked that school out of the rankings, are the most successful high school football program in U.S. history, based on their number of all-time wins.
After this past Friday's 49-0 win over Robert E. Lee (Montgomery, Ala.), the Wildcats improved their all-time record since 1913 to 866-201-34, which includes 24 state championships.
This week's rankings also were shaken up with Moeller (Cincinnati) topping previous No. 28 St. Xavier (Cincinnati) 27-24. Moeller sat outside the top 50 in Week 4, but the crucial win propelled the Crusaders into this week's rankings to No. 40. St. Xavier remains worthy and still has a head-to-head win over Colerain (Cincinnati), another FAB 50 team. Since Colerain won its game, all three Cincinnati teams are now in the FAB 50. It was possible to leave the other two Cincinnati teams in the rankings because enough other previously ranked teams lost.
Voters: Kynon Codrington (Miami, Fla.); Doug Huff (Wheeling, W. Va.); Jim McCormick (Philadelphia); Brian Stumpf (Torrance, Calif.); Mark Tennis (Stockton, Calif.).
State editors and contributors: David Auguste, Mike Grimala, Randy Jennings, Paul Muyskens, Lucas O'Neill, Brandon Parker, Chris Parish
*Ties in points are broken according to which team was ranked higher by a majority of panelists.

| RK (LW) | SCHOOL (1ST PLACE VOTES) | REC | PTS | COMMENT |
| 1 (1) | Don Bosco (4) Ramsey, NJ | 3-0 | 249 | The Ironmen remain the top team in the FAB 50 rankings, but now a Florida team, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), is earning some shine for the top spot as well. This past weekend they ably dispatched Ridgewood (Ridgewood, N.J.) 35-0. The next two weeks will be telling for the Ironmen as they face regionally ranked Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) at home this Friday, followed by a major meeting with No. 6 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) that could determine their national title hopes. |
| 2 (2) | Saint Thomas Aquinas School (1) Fort Lauderdale, FL | 3-0 | 246 | The Raiders broke open a close game in the second half with 20 unanswered points to down previous FAB 50 No. 3 De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) 30-6 on ESPN2. The Raider's defense forced four Spartans turnovers and dominated the line of scrimmage. Next up is a district road game Friday against McArthur (Hollywood, Fla.). |
| 3 (4) | Allen Allen, TX | 4-0 | 240 | The Eagles move closer to the top after an impressive 44-7 victory against previously unbeaten Plano (Plano, Texas). QB Alec Morris remained hot by going 22 of 32 for 306 yards and four touchdowns. Up next Friday is a home game against Lewisville. |
| 4 (5) | Armwood Seffner, FL | 4-0 | 235 | Senior RB Matt Jones, a Florida commit, returned from a knee injury in style by scoring three touchdowns in Armwood's 68-0 blowout of Leto (Tampa, Fla.). The Hawks led 61-0 at the break. On Friday, Jones a Co. look to continue their dominant play at Hillsborough County foe Jefferson (Tampa, Fla.). |
| 5 (6) | Katy Katy, TX | 4-0 | 230 | Similar to Allen's win against a 3-0 team, the Tigers did the same to previously unbeaten Seven Lakes (Katy, Texas) with a 46-7 romp. QB Brooks Haack was on the attack with three passing touchdowns and one rushing. This week, Katy plays at Rice Stadium against Strake Jesuit (Houston). |
| 6 (8) | St. Edward Lakewood, OH | 5-0 | 224 | Junior running back Dwayne Aaron ran 19 times for 180 yards and three touchdowns -- all in the first half -- as the Eagles dominated visiting Jefferson (Tampa, Fla.) 52-13. The Eagles also rolled up 490 total offense yards. Up next Friday is a trip to Ursuline (Youngstown, Ohio) with No. 1 Don Bosco Prep looming for the following Saturday. |
| 7 (9) | Trinity For Boys Louisville, KY | 5-0 | 219 | James Quick, a junior wide receiver-kick returner, had 194 all-purpose yards as the Shamrocks bested Cathedral (Indianapolis) 36-14. Quick landed four passes for 70 yards and one TD and returned the second half kickoff 98 yards to snap a 14-14 halftime knot. Trinity faces city rival St. Xavier (Louisville, Ky.) Friday night at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in a rivalry game that has attracted crowds of 30,000 or more. |
| 8 (7) | Trinity Euless, TX | 4-0 | 216 | One close game will not always cost a team too many spots in the FAB 50, so the Trojans only going down one after a 38-35 overtime triumph over Heritage (Colleyville, Texas) could be viewed as generous by some. Coach Steve Lineweaver will be looking for a more impressive outing Thursday at L.D. Bell (Hurst, Texas). |
| 9 (10) | Good Counsel Olney, MD | 4-0 | 211 | Coach Bob Milloy heads the top team in Maryland and a rising national power as his Falcons remain unbeaten after drubbing Gonzaga (Washington) 49-7 this past weekend. Good Counsel continues to dominate its state and this coming week gets a chance to go out-of-state and compete Saturday night with previously-ranked East region foe Red Lion Christian (Bear, Del.). |
| 10 (11) | Bishop Gorman Las Vegas, NV | 5-1 | 205 | Since the team's loss to No. 4 Armwood by three points, the Gaels have outscored four Nevada teams by a combined 244-13 margin. The latest romp was 74-6 against Sierra Vista (Las Vegas). QB Anu Solomon completed eight of his first nine passes with five going for touchdowns. It definitely won't be easy this week when the top ranked team from Southern California, No. 13 Servite of Anaheim, comes to town for a Friday matchup on ESPNU. |
| 11 (13) | Harrison Farmington Hills, MI | 5-0 | 199 | Wide receiver Aaron Burbridge landed four passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Jake Vento as the Hawks blanked Southfield-Lathrup (Lathrup Village, Mich.) 43-0. Harrison is host Friday to Oak Park (Oak Park, Mich.). |
| 12 (14) | Maine Township South Park Ridge, IL | 5-0 | 191 | Quarterback Matt Alviti passed for four touchdowns -- three in the second half -- as Maine South had 26 unanswered points in a 40-24 win over New Trier (Winnetka, Ill.). The Hawks visit Niles West (Skokie, Ill.) Friday. If they keep winning, they could be in the top 10 in two weeks. |
| 13 (15) | Servite Anaheim, CA | 4-0 | 187 | Three teams that the Friars have beaten are all 3-1, including Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.), which lost for the first time this season in a 27-14 loss to Servite. QB Cody Pittman completed his first 10 passes and ended 12 of 16 for 163 yards and two scores. He also led all rushers with nine carries for 63 yards. The Friars face a huge test Friday at No. 10 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) in a game that will be shown on ESPNU. |
| 14 (16) | Grayson Loganville, GA | 4-0 | 183 | The Rams have outscored opponents 146-34 to open the season. Grayson is coming off a bye week and on Friday will tangle on the road with Shiloh (Shiloh, Ga.). |
| 15 (17) | Pittsburgh Central Catholic Pittsburgh, PA | 4-0 | 179 | Coach Terry Totten has his team looking sharp so far this season, as evidenced by its 31-13 win over local foe Woodland Hills (Pittsburgh). The Vikings have some upcoming Western Pennsylvania challengers to vanquish as they look to rise in both the regional and national rankings. The Vikings host Penn Hills (Pittsburgh) this Friday night. |
| 16 (18) | Tulsa Union Tulsa, OK | 4-0 | 174 | The Redskins appeared to have a bit of a hangover from three straight high-profile victories Friday night, falling behind winless Bixby (Bixby, Okla.) 10-0 in the first quarter, but got a wakeup call shortly thereafter and went on to rout the Spartans 67-17. Kendall Holmes led the way for Union, rushing for 129 yards and a touchdown. Up next, Page (Sand Springs, Okla.) hosts Union on Friday. |
| 17 (19) | Warren Central Indianapolis, IN | 6-0 | 166 | The Warriors scored on their first four possessions and led 36-0 at halftime en route to a 50-19 romp over North Vigo (Terre Haute, Ind.). Delonte Buckley scored three TDs with two on runs and another receiving. Next up Friday is a showdown at state No. 2 and unbeaten Carmel (Carmel, Ind.). |
| 18 (20) | Hamilton Chandler, AZ | 5-0 | 161 | The win streak for the Huskies reached 45 as they defeated Mesquite (Gilbert, Ariz.) 30-7. It also was the fifth time in five games this season that the Hamilton defense has not allowed more than one score. That defense will have its work cut out for it this Friday at Chandler (Chandler, Ariz.). That team has averaged more than 45 points per game in a 4-1 start. |
| 19 (21) | Bellevue Bellevue, WA | 4-0 | 158 | Timmy Haehl capped a dominating first half with a 35-yard interception return as the Wolverines led 48-0 and went on for a 54-0 victory over Lake Washington (Kirkland, Wash.). Their opening win over Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.) also has been enhanced due to Oaks Christian's win last week over previous FAB 50 ranked St. Bonaventure (Venture, Calif.). On Friday, Bellevue travels to Mercer Island (Mercer Island, Wash.) for a matchup against a team led by Elite 11 quarterback Jeff Lindquist. |
| 20 (23) | Lake Travis Austin, TX | 5-0 | 155 | The Cavaliers continued their strong early start by capping Dripping Springs (Dripping Springs, Texas) 54-16. QB Baker Mayfield threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns and added another 73 yards and one score as a rusher. Lake Travis has a bye on its schedule this week before resuming play on Oct. 7. |
| 21 (27) | Camden Kingsland, GA | 4-0 | 147 | Junior QB/K Brice Ramsey, a University of Georgia pledge, booted a 57-yard field goal in the Wildcats' 55-0 rout of the Bradwell Institute (Hinesville, Ga.). Camden plays host to Treasure Coast (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) this Friday in an interstate tilt. |
| 22 (24) | Stephenson Stone Mountain, GA | 4-0 | 144 | Coach Ron Gartrell rested most of his starters for the second half in Stephenson's 56-35 romp over Westlake (Atlanta). The Jags had long touchdown plays of 78, 80 and 85 yards. Next up is a home game against Luella (Locust Grove, Ga.). |
| 23 (22) | Hoover Birmingham, AL | 5-0 | 135 | Caleb Sims scored touchdowns three ways -- rushing, pass receiving and a punt return -- as the Bucs survived six turnovers and 13 penalties to record a 35-21 win at Gadsden City (Gadsden, Ala.). Up next Friday is a visit to Pelham (Pelham, Ala.). With previous No. 12 Prattville (Prattville, Ala.) losing last week, Hoover is now the top-ranked team in Alabama. |
| 24 (25) | Miami Norland Miami, FL | 4-0 | 134 | Norland crushed Miami Springs (Miami Springs, Fla.) 68-0 Thursday night. Senior RB Duke Johnson, a Miami commit, was injured and did not play. The Vikings host Hialeah (Hialeah, Fla.) on Saturday in this week's game. |
| 25 (3) | De La Salle Concord, CA | 2-1 | 132 | The Spartans had some success driving the ball on the St. Thomas Aquinas defense during last Friday's game, but imploded with four turnovers, dropped balls and missed passes in their 30-6 defeat. Many still see De La Salle as a favorite to win the CIF Open Division state title given its trend of significant improvement during seasons past. The Spartans start league play Friday at Livermore (Livermore, Calif.). |
| 26 (26) | Maryville Maryville, TN | 5-0 | 128 | Quarterback Patton Robinette passed for three touchdowns and rushed for a score as the Rebels dominated Oak Ridge (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) 31-6. The Rebel defense also limited the Wildcats to 106 total yards. Maryville tackles visiting Bearden (Knoxville, Tenn.) in this Friday's game. |
| 27 (30) | Mallard Creek Charlotte, NC | 5-0 | 127 | Senior running back Jela Duncan rushed for 192 yards and four touchdowns as the Mavericks, with 627 total offense yards, raced past Lake Norman (Mooresville, N.C.) 55-0. Mallard Creek visits Vance (Charlotte, N.C.) in this Friday's game. |
| 28 (31) | DeSoto DeSoto, TX | 5-0 | 122 | Vondrick Jackson's 24-yard interception return for a score was part of a five-touchdown explosion in the early minutes of the Eagles' 61-13 mashing of NOAH (Tulsa, Okla.). DeSoto takes this week off with a bye, then resumes its schedule on Oct. 7. |
| 29 (33) | Gaffney Gaffney, SC | 6-0 | 112 | Quarterback Joey Copeland passed for 284 yards and four touchdowns as the Indians routed winless Greenville (Greenville, S.C.) 73-0. Gaffney is idle this weekend. |
| 30 (29) | Coppell Coppell, TX | 4-0 | 108 | We'll find out a lot about the Cowboys on Thursday when they play 2011 Class 5A Division II state finalist Denton Guyer (Denton, Texas) on the road. They warmed up for that matchup by beating Saginaw (Saginaw, Texas) 35-6 behind QB Jake Larson's 197 yards passing and three touchdowns. |
| 31 (34) | Mission Viejo Mission Viejo, CA | 3-1 | 97 | Despite giving up an 86-yard interception return for a score, the Diablos didn't give up an offensive touchdown and came up with a 17-12 win over previous No. 37 Long Beach Poly. Alex Bridgford's two first-half touchdown passes also were critical. Mission Viejo plays next on Friday against dangerous Carson (Carson, Calif.), which played a close game with Long Beach Poly three weeks ago. |
| 32 (35) | Daphne Daphne, AL | 5-0 | 96 | The defending Class 6A state champion Trojans extended their win streak to 20 games with a 41-20 win at Theodore (Theodore, Ala.). Auburn recruit T. J. | 33 (32) | Phoebus Hampton, VA | 3-0 | 90 | The Phantoms' game this past weekend against Heritage (Newport News, Va.) was rescheduled to Monday, a game they won 37-0. Next up this Saturday is Allen Iverson's alma mater Bethel (Hampton, Va.). |
| 34 (38) | Rockhurst Kansas City, MO | 5-0 | 80 | Despite playing without star running back Jordan Walker, who sat out with a knee injury, Rockhurst had no problems with visiting Rock Bridge (Columbia, Mo.) Friday night as the defense forced four turnovers and Nick Jones was an efficient 10-of-15 for 146 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-6 win. The Hawklets visit Hickman (Columbia, Mo.) this Friday night. |
| 35 (36) | McEachern Powder Springs, GA | 4-0 | 71 | The Indians are coming off a bye after dismantling Campbell (Smyrna, Ga.) 55-0 the previous week. McEachern is on the road Friday night at South Cobb (Austell, Ga.). |

Glenbard West next plays host Saturday to Proviso West (Hillside, Ill.). |
| 37 (39) | Manatee Bradenton, FL | 1-2 | 63 | The bye week came at a good time for the Hurricanes as they looked to regroup from their 22-16 loss against FAB 50 No. 1 Don Bosco Prep two weeks earlier. On Friday at home, junior QB Cord Sandberg leads the 'Canes in a crosstown clash with rival Southeast (Bradenton, Fla.). |
| 38 (42) | Billy Ryan Denton, TX | 5-0 | 62 | The Raiders pulled away down the stretch for a 42-28 win against Lake Dallas (Corinth, Texas). The go-ahead points came on a 13-yard pass from Kevin Carpenter to Sam Johnson. Denton Ryan has a bye on the schedule this week with the next game set for Oct. 6. |
| 39 (43) | Butler Matthews, NC | 4-1 | 61 | Junior tailback Josh Glisson ran 19 times for 129 yards as the Bulldogs routed Rocky River (Mint Hill, N.C.) 52-6. The two-time defending Class 4A state champs, who lost their only game to No. 27 Mallard Creek, visit East Mecklenburg (Charlotte, N.C.) on Friday. |
| 40 (NR) | Moeller Cincinnati, OH | 5-0 | 60 | The Crusaders join the FAB 50 after surviving a late rally by FAB 50 No. 42 St. Xavier (Cincinnati) to prevail 27-24. Kerry Watkins had 120 all-purpose yards and scored two TDs for Moeller. In this week's game Thursday, the Crusaders host La Salle (Cincinnati). |
| 41 (46) | Skyline Dallas, TX | 4-0 | 53 | University of Texas commit Thomas Johnson, a receiver, is one reason this team is soaring. In the team's 36-0 win against Berkner (Richardson, Texas), Johnson hauled in six catches for 103 yards and three scores. The Raiders hit the road later this week on Friday to play Richardson (Richardson, Texas). |
| 42 (28) | Saint Xavier Cincinnati, OH | 3-2 | 43 | The Bombers misfired on a 32-yard field goal with six seconds left and bowed to rival Moeller (Cincinnati) 27-24. The Bombers, who also lost their game two weeks ago to FAB 50 ranked Trinity (Louisville, Ky.), play another city rival, Elder (Cincinnati), on Friday at home. |
| 43 (45) | Holy Spirit Absecon, NJ | 3-0 | 41 | Having taken care of Bridgeton (Bridgeton, N.J.) this past weekend 38-0, up next for coach Charlie Roman's road warrior team is a meeting with St. Joseph (Hammonton, N.J.). The Spartans are hitting the road on Saturday for the third time in the past month. |
| 44 (47) | Archbishop Wood Warminster, PA | 3-1 | 38 | Following a tough opening loss to Pittsburgh Central Catholic, the Vikings have reeled off three straight wins - including this past Friday's 42-7 win over St. Joseph's (Philadelphia) - and have controlled area opponents with impressive ease. Next up is visiting Glenn Mills (Glenn Mills, Pa.) this Saturday. |
| 45 (50) | Steele Cibolo, TX | 5-0 | 31 | This team is beginning to pile up some wins with an 18-game win streak. The defending Class 5A Division II state champs kept things clicking in a 54-7 triumph over Stephen F. Austin (Austin, Texas). Like several other FAB 50 teams from Texas, Steele is off this week before coming back on Oct. 7. |
| 46 (48) | Cedar Falls Cedar Falls, IA | 5-0 | 21 | The Tigers intercepted five passes and running back Barkley Hill rushed for 213 yards and two scores in a 27-7 win over Xavier (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). Up next Friday is a visit from Wahlert (Dubuque, Iowa). |
| 47 (44) | Colerain Cincinnati, OH | 4-1 | 16 | Despite handing Middletown (Middletown, Ohio) its first loss in a 21-13 game, the Cardinals still had to drop a few spots this week since the team they lost to, No. 42 St. Xavier (Cincinnati), was itself defeated by Moeller. Junior Jackson Sorn rushed for two scores and 98 yards to lead the win. This week on Friday, Colerain hosts Fairfield (Fairfield, Ohio). |
| 48 (NR) | Gilman School Baltimore, MD | 3-1 | 13 | Coach Biff Poggi has his team back on track and back into the FAB 50 after a close loss a few weeks ago to local rival and national power Good Counsel (Olney, Md.). A sound 38-8 win this past weekend over Georgetown Prep (North Bethesda, Md.) continued the road to recovery for Gilman. The Greyhounds look to build more with a game this Saturday afternoon at home against Archbishop Spalding (Severn, Md.). |
| 49 (NR) | Santa Margarita Catholic RanchoStMargarita, CA | 4-0 | 12 | A 39-21 win over Carson (Carson, Calif.) helped push the Eagles into this week's FAB 50. They beat the Colts by a wider margin than previous FAB 50 ranked Long Beach Poly did and are expected to give No. 13 Servite a serious run for its money in the CIF Southern Section's Trinity League. Santa Margarita meets 4-0 Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos, Calif.) on Thursday. |
| 50 (NR) | Valdosta Valdosta, GA | 5-0 | 11 | QB Shelby Wilkes tossed four touchdown passes in Valdosta's 49-0 over Robert E. Lee (Montgomery, Ala.). The Wildcats battle state-ranked M.L. King (Lithonia, Ga.) in this week's game Friday at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. |
