Gail Goestenkors is coming off her fourth consecutive season of leading the Longhorns into the NCAA tournament, but with Baylor and Texas A&M being considered national title contenders, the critics have been out and chirping about her recruiting.
Somewhat unconventionally, Texas came into the fall with one 2012 commitment, No. 70 Empress Davenport of Ducanville, Texas, and four underclass pledges from the 2013 class. The signing of the No. 10 prospect in the country, Imani Stafford, should serve notice that the program will not be lacking the talent to compete with the best in the Big 12 and the nation.
Stafford, at 6 feet 7, will be one of the tallest players in the country. But she isn't just her height. She has USA Basketball experience, has competed on big stages and has continued to develop her skills to the point that her impact in Austin is expected to be immediate. With 6-2 forward Kayla Brewer transferring from South Carolina and incoming Super 60 prospect Jada Terry, a 6-3 post, the Longhorns' frontcourt looks to be in great shape. It was an area that lacked depth during Goestenkors' first four seasons.
