ESPN Player Evaluations

USJN-July 2013: Long and agile faceup-4 insider; fundamentally skilled, finishes in traffic, keeps ball high on putbacks, displays interior footwork; stretches the defense to the arc; mobile in uptempo game; competes on glass, defends post; plays both ends of the floor. (Olson)

USAB U16 Trials-May 11: Nice size with a long, solid build. Text book skills and an ability to read the floor from the forward spot give her an edge on a lot of her peers. Methodically plays a well thought game at both ends of the floor. Has the ability to post up but at the same time is effective on the move and off the cut. Keeps the ball high and finishes quickly in traffic. Does a sound job on the boards but will have to do a better job of holding her ground when the pushing and shoving starts and the whistle isn't blowing. At her age she's offering up some play that is generally reserved for upperclassmen. The challenge will be to keep advancing her game. (Lewis)

Fall in Philly-Oct. 10: The fleeting nature of athletic careers prompts the constant search for the "next." Though Elena Delle Donne has been absent from the high-school game only two years, a candidate being touted as a replacement for her unique mix of size and skill set may have materialized in Mathias. She is two inches shorter than Delle Donne, and hasn't even played her freshman season at Fox Chapel High School in Pittsburgh, but the comparisons aren't too far off. Mathias moves well, at 6-3, handles the ball well and has deft touch inside and way out. She still makes "young" mistakes, mistiming jumps on rebounds and losing vision of her mark on defense, for example. But she also manages some truly jaw-dropping maneuvers. She for example is nearly ambidextrous, once going hard into a spin move and finishing on a jump stop -- all with her left hand. (Nelson)

Summer 2010: Young post players are often heralded for their size and potential dominance, most of the time they are considered projects and allowed time to develop. It's rare that you find kids at Mathias' size as far along as she is skill wise. The 6-3 kid has a very solid foundation in terms of athleticism and skills. Athletically she is very mobile and can rebound with the best of them. Her second jump is often started while defenders are landing from their first. She has a soft touch around the basket and can finish well with both her left and right hand. On the defensive end of the floor she is just as far along. With her length and athleticism she can challenge shots around the rim and her agile feet allow her to keep opposing players in front of her. Mathias is the kind of post player that will be in high demand throughout her recruiting process. (Moore)
