Kennedy Classic-Jan. 09: Next year at Rutger's, whether it's at the post or forward position, Christine Huber will make an impact at the defensive end and, we can assure you, C. Vivian Stringer ain't mad about that one bit. A lean, lanky and mobile 6 feet 4, Huber is adept at using her physical attributes to make her even bigger and more imposing to shooters. She keeps her hands up and active, and they engage often when she explodes off the floor, making her a very effective shot-blocker and alterer. Sometimes Huber, from West Islip, N.Y., and John the Baptist High School, gets too bought into playing the wings. She has skills suited for the outer limits of the floor, but being out there renders her a little inert. She and her coaches are well-advised not to forget that she can be a very slinky and effective inside scorer, using her flexibility and long arms to deliver a nice assortment of shots, from jump hooks to impossible-angle scoop shots with either her right or left hand.
Summer 08: I realize she has presented a bit of a conundrum for the locals because, at her size, she does not have a commanding presence on the boxes. Along the lines of Vicki Baugh, Kayla Pederson, Elena Delle Donne and Glory Johnson, Huber advances the trend of big forwards who can handle the ball and shoot it from the perimeter. She is this class' version.
Huber is long, mobile and can create her own shot. Her lack of much inside punch tends to work against her more on defense, which she certainly will be forced to guard bigger players, than be a disappointment on offense. However, for the next level, she'll have to develop at least a little compentancy scoring with her back to the basket.
