- Nirra Fields has had her eligibility restored, but No. 10 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) is holding its breath on another star guard, Jordan Adams, according to coach Kevin Kiernan.
The No. 11 prospect in the 2012 class, Fields was declared ineligible by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) after she moved to the Los Angeles area with new Laker coach Mike Brown, who has become her guardian along with his wife Carolyn.
The UCLA-bound Fields had her eligibiity restored just in time for the Nike Tournament of Champions after new paperwork was submitted to the CIF. Fields has been practicing with Mater Dei all season and Kiernan said she "is ready to go. She will be fine."
Mater Dei, the two-time defending national high-school champions, open play in the Joe Smith Invitational Division on Monday against Buford (Ga.), which is ranked No. 12 in the POWERADE FAB 50 and features No. 2 junior Kaela Davis and No. 30 junior prospect Kristina Nelson.
Adams, the No. 6 prospect in 2012, has been out all week with a strained posterior-cruciate ligament (PCL) in her knee.
"We're hoping she is back soon," Kiernan said in a text message.
