- Chirrisse "Bryce" Owens of DeSoto, Texas, committed to the University of New Mexico after an official visit this past weekend, according to her club coach, James Daniel of the Houston Insiders.
The 5-foot-6 Owens is "an ultra-athletic point guard with great quickness, capable of changing games on both ends," Daniel said.
Owens averaged 8.4 points, 3.4 assists and 2.7 steals as a junior at DeSoto.
"The University of New Mexico is a phenomenal school," Owens said via email message to Daniel. "Coach (Yvonne) Sanchez and the entire coaching staff at UNM made me feel like they really wanted me there. The family atmosphere I felt between the team and the coaches was phenomenal. Coach Sanchez is a down-to-earth person, and made me feel like I was already a member of the team; she is very easy to talk to, fun to be around and has a serious focus on the player's education.
My meeting with the president of UNM, Dr. David Schmidly, made a real impact on my decision to choose UNM, He talked about how important education is first, then athletics. Being a former athlete himself he understands the stress of being a student-athlete and he has a open door policy for students. He also took time out of his busy schedule to meet and talk with me and that was awesome."
