No. 21 Katie Collier commits to in-state program
Katie Collier of Covington, Wash., the No. 21-ranked player in the ESPNU HoopGurlz 100, has verbally committed to the University of Washington, according to her club coach Damian Young of Tree of Hope. The 6-foot-3 forward-post also considered Gonzaga and UCLA before deciding on the Huskies.

"Her support system is here and it's the perfect fit with the new coaching staff," Young said. "Everything just fell into place. She's always wanted to go there."

Collier has had a tough five weeks after falling ill while on her official visit to Washington and being diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. The prognosis is good so far, with a high likelihood she can return to her normal activities. She completed her first round of chemotherapy treatments at the Seattle Cancer Center and is on a schedule of four weeks on and four weeks off of the chemo.

"She's one of the toughest kids I've ever been around," Young said. "She's been by her mom's side through breast cancer and now her battling leukemia, it hasn't hampered her attitude to beating it and always being a winner."

Collier, a four-star rated prospect, is the third player to commit to first-year head coach Kevin McGuff's program. She will join fellow Tree of Hope teammate Airashay Rogers of Renton, Wash., a 5-7 point guard who also is a four-star prospect, and Heather Corral of Vancouver, Wash., a 6-1 combo guard who has a three-star rating.
