No. 17 Kahleah Copper is staying in the Northeast

Kahleah Copper of Philadelphia, Pa., the No. 17 prospect in the 2012 class, said she is signing with Rutgers University.

The 6-foot-1 wing also considered DePaul, St. John's and Syracuse. She cited her mother's battle with breast cancer as a significant factor in her decision.

"It all came down to wanting to be close to home," said Copper, a senior at Prep Charter (Philadelphia, Pa.).

Copper's addition to Rutgers' 2012 signing class makes it one of the best in the country. Already in the class were No. 8 Rachel Hollivay of Columbus, Miss.; No. 69 Precious Person of Rex, Ga., and No. 75 Ariel Butts of Columbus, Ga.

Rutgers also signed a top-ranked class in 2011 with a distinctively homegrown flavor. Copper played club ball with No. 6 Briyona Canty and No. 11 Betnijah Laney from that class. She said the potential of the 2011 and 2012 classes was a strong attraction.

"Those are my teammates," she said. "I know what we're capable of, and I wanted to be a part of it."
