3-star 2013 guard Brooke Allemand picks a Mountain West program
Brooke Allemand of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, has verbally committed to the University of New Mexico, according to her club team coach, Ray Caldwell of San Antonio's Finest. The 5-foot-5 junior at Champion High School (Boerne, Texas) is rated a three-star prospect by ESPN HoopGurlz, and considered Rice, Santa Clara and UT-San Antonio before deciding on the Lobos.
"The resources and support available academically and athletically both in regards to staff and facilities are tremendous," Brooke's father, Andre, said in an email. "Everyone we encountered made us feel that they genuinely cared for each athlete and were not only preparing them to compete at the highest level while there but compete and be successful in life after UNM basketball; an easy feeling to have when we were informed that last year the women's basketball team was eighth in the nation with a team (grade-point average) over 3.4. The support of UNM women's basketball from the city of Albuquerque is terrific and game time in 'the Pit' is an awesome environment. It's a place that we would be very comfortable and proud for our daughter to spend her college years."
Allemand, point guard who can shoot from long range, is the second pledge from the 2013 class for first-year head coach, Yvonne Sanchez, who as on the bench under Don Flanagan for 11 years as an assistant coach as well as associate head coach, before taking over the program.
"Brooke is an overachiever. Whether in the classroom or on the court, Brooke demands success from herself," Caldwell said. "Her ability to run a team and shoot the ball with the best will benefit the UNM program immensely. Brooke relishes the opportunity to learn from coach Sanchez and her enthusiastic staff while performing in front of thousands of fans on a nightly basis. The style of play and conference suits her strengths."
The Lobos also have a verbal commitment from Shaylee Anderson of Texico, N.M., a 6-2 forward prospect. The program signed a pair of three star prospects this fall from the 2012 class -- Khadijah Shumpert of Oakdale, Minn., a 6-1 forward who is ranked 54th at the position in the senior class; and Bryce Owens of DeSoto, Texas, a 5-6 point guard who is ranked 102nd at the position in the senior class.

2-star PG Bryce Owens tabs Mountain West
Chirrisse "Bryce" Owens of DeSoto, Texas, committed to the University of New Mexico after an official visit this past weekend, according to her club coach, James Daniel of the Houston Insiders.
The 5-foot-6 Owens is "an ultra-athletic point guard with great quickness, capable of changing games on both ends," Daniel said.
Owens averaged 8.4 points, 3.4 assists and 2.7 steals as a junior at DeSoto.
"The University of New Mexico is a phenomenal school," Owens said via email message to Daniel. "Coach (Yvonne) Sanchez and the entire coaching staff at UNM made me feel like they really wanted me there. The family atmosphere I felt between the team and the coaches was phenomenal. Coach Sanchez is a down-to-earth person, and made me feel like I was already a member of the team; she is very easy to talk to, fun to be around and has a serious focus on the player's education.
My meeting with the president of UNM, Dr. David Schmidly, made a real impact on my decision to choose UNM, He talked about how important education is first, then athletics. Being a former athlete himself he understands the stress of being a student-athlete and he has a open door policy for students. He also took time out of his busy schedule to meet and talk with me and that was awesome."
