Aleiah Brandon's big third quarter powers Centennial (Corona, Calif.) to Gray Division crown at the Nike TOC

Centennial (Corona, Calif.) coach Martin Woods doesn't always know who is going to step up for his team, but he always counts on his team's depth to come through down the stretch. In Thursday's 69-58 victory in the Gray Division title game of the 2011 Nike Tournament of Champions, San Diego State signee Aleiah Brandon was that player.

"I knew we were going up against a well-coached team and they were going to throw punches at us throughout the game, and our whole focus was just to maintain," Woods said.

After securing just a one-point lead at the half against Desert Vista (Phoenix, Ariz.), Brandon, a 6-foot-2 senior forward, scored 11 points in the third quarter on her way to a team-high 18 points. In a span of less than three minutes she led the Huskies on a 7-1 run that pushed her team up 46-38 with 1:10 to play in the third.

"We have players that can play different positions that can step up at any time and we pride ourselves on that," Woods said. "You know, one night it's (Jasmine) Flanagan and another night it's Ashley Merrill. Aleiah Brandon did her thing and Jon'Nae (Vermillion) did her thing. Every game in this tournament we've had somebody to carry us."

From Brandon's explosion on, Centennial was in cruise control, getting seven fourth-quarter points from sophomore forward Vermillion that helped the Huskies maintain a lead for the last 4:31 of the quarter.

For Centennial, the team has won its first two preseason tournaments after winning a local event at Rialto (Calif.) before heading to Chandler, Ariz., for the TOC.
