6-3 P Kaelyn Causwell picks SEC program

Kaelyn Causwell, the 6-foot-3 forward-post from Duluth, Ga., told ESPN HoopGurlz she verbally committed to Georgia during the July evaluation period break.

"Kaelyn really turned a corner for us mid-season last year and has continued to develop her game over the last few months," Jan Azar, Causwell's Wesleyan High Schol coach, said. "All of her hard work led to a great summer for us and brought her some offers from SEC and ACC schools. She is a coachable player who wants to be the best she can be and I know that she will continue to work hard this season to lead our team to another state championship and to prepare herself to play in the SEC."

Causwell, a four-star prospect, is the fourth player from the 2012 class to commit to the Bulldogs. She will join 5-7 point guard Marjorie Butler, the No. 76 player in the ESPNU HoopGurlz 100 of Knoxville, Tenn., 5-11 wing Shacobia Barbee, No. 87 in the class from Murfreesboro, Tenn., and 6-3 forward Merrit Hempe, the four-star prospect from Falmouth, Va.

Georgia adds a top 100 forward from Tennessee

Shacobia Barbee, the 5-foot-11 forward from Murfreesboro, Tenn., has verbally committed to Georgia, her Riverdale High School coach, John Wild, told ESPN HoopGurlz. The No. 87 ranked prospect in the 2012 ESPNU HoopGurlz 100 had Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt as finalists.

"It's a place where I wanted to spend my college career," Barbee, who plays club ball with the Tenn. Flight, said in a statement. "I was there for camp and love the team (and) coaching staff. My summer teammate Marjorie Butler will be there with me."

Georgia, which finished last season 23-11, lost in the Sweet 16, the program's 19th appearance that deep in the NCAA tournament, to eventual national champion Texas A&M, now has three four-star prospects in its 2012 recruiting haul. Barbee and Butler, who is ranked 76th in the class, will be joined by Merritt Hempe, a 6-3 forward from Falmouth, Va.

The Bulldogs could sign two more in the class but with these three it's a great start heading into the July NCAA-certified evaluation period.

Merritt Hempe changes course from ACC to SEC

Merritt Hempe, the 6-foot-3 forward from Falmouth, Va., originally committed to Virginia in September of 2010. Following the resignation of Hall of Fame coach Debbie Ryan this spring, Hempe reopened her recruitment and recently decided on Georgia.

"Originally I had committed to coach (Debbie) Ryan and her staff," Hempe said, "when she left I had opened it back up. Coach (Andy) Landers and UGA were in the mix the first time around. I was really excited to hear his plans for me in the future of Georgia basketball."

Hempe, a four-star prospect from Stafford High School (Fredricksburg, Va.), also considered Georgetown, Purdue, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest this time through the process. Before her first commitment in 2010 she made 13 unofficial visits.

Hempe is the second 2012 commitment for Georgia. She joins Marjorie Bulter, the 5-7 point guard from Knoxville, Tenn., ranked 76th in the ESPNU HoopGurlz 100, in the Bulldogs recruiting class to date.

2012 four-star PG Marjorie Butler verbals to SEC program

Marjorie Butler, the 5-foot-7 point guard from Knoxville, Tenn., has verbally committed to the University of Georgia. She chose Andy Landers program over finalists Auburn, Florida, Stanford and Vanderbilt.

Butler told ESPN HoopGurlz she wasn't originally planning on committing this early but her unofficial visits changed a lot of that, especially how comfortable she was in Athens. She made unofficial visits to Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech.

"Just growing up in an SEC town I always saw myself at an SEC program," Butler said.

The Webb School junior carries a 4.6 grade-point average and wants to study kinesiology and Butler found two schools relatively close to home with that program in Auburn and Georgia. She is also a student of the game and the recruiting at each school she considered. It was that diligence that allowed her to eliminate Stanford as an option because of the three guards expected to sign in the 2011 class as well as the distance from home.

Georgia's is a four-hour drive from the Butler home which her father, Danny Butler, said he was excited about so the family could continue to support her. But part of the decision came with having a home away from home.

The current Georgia roster includes three former teammates of Butler's from her Tennessee Flight club team -- sophomores Jasmine Hassell and Jasmine James, and freshman Ronika Ransford.

"Seeing the success that they had right away made me believe I could do the same," Butler said.

Butler, a four-star prospect, sees her style of play as a fit as well and she hopes to fill the shoes of her former and now future teammate, Jasmine James.

"Power guards," Butler added, "This is the type of guard that fits well."

Georgia breaks tradition, lands verbal 2013 combo guard

Shannon Cranshaw, the 5-foot-9 combo guard from Norcross, Ga., gave her verbal commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs and head coach Andy Landers this weekend, her father Todd Cranshaw told ESPN HoopGurlz. Cranshaw also told ESPN HoopGurlz that his daughter was the youngest player offered by UGA.

Cranshaw isn't alone as there are at least seven players in the sophomore class to have committed. The commitment is an anomaly for Georgia as Landers has historically waited to extend offers to players.

The Orlando Sentinel's Volusia County Player of the Year last season at Father Lopez in Florida, Cranshaw, moved to Georgia and is now at Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross. As a freshman she averaged 20 points, five assists and five steals while knocking down 67 3-pointers.

Ranked No. 21 in the 2010 class by ESPN HoopGurlz, Ransford hardly looked hobbled by the injury she suffered against Germantown Academy in early December. The injury forced her to miss the Nike Tournament of Champions.
