Kentucky's on the board
When the sun rose on Monday morning, Janee Thompson was one of only two ESPN HoopGurlz top 100 point guards left undecided. When November dawns on Tuesday, Khadijah Sessions will be the last one left. Thompson, the ultra-athletic point guard who is rated No. 35 overall in the country, decided to give her verbal pledge to the University of Kentucky after closely considering South Carolina, Northwestern, Auburn, Miami and Virginia Tech.
For coach Matthew Mitchell, Thompson's arrival in Lexington will come at the perfect time. This season Kentucky is loaded in the backcourt with both talent and experience as fifth-year senior Amber Smith is joined by LSU transfer and fellow senior Crystal Riley. With both Riley and Smith leaving after this season, the Wildcats' ability to land Thompson stabilizes their backcourt situation as they are picking up a true point guard who has proven her worth against some of the best competition the summer circuit has to offer.
The Thompson addition gives Kentucky quite a bit to play with as it looks to build its 2012-2013 roster. Thompson will have the support of combo guard Adia Mathies, who would be a senior Thompson's freshman year, as well as Maegan Conwright and Jennifer O'Neill, who will be juniors. All three have played some lead guard for the Wildcats at one point or another during their careers.
Kentucky provided Thompson with a great opportunity to play early in her career while still having an ideal support system to help her through the growing pains. Thompson is a talented lead guard with the potential to be a major piece for Kentucky down the line. As the sun sets tonight, it looks like Kentucky will be in great hands.
