Iowa-bound senior Brooke Backes scored the lone goal on an assist from Samantha Kokoska as Carmel defeated Hamilton Southeastern, 1-0, in the state final. The title marked the ninth for Carmel since 1994 -- all under 21-year coach Frank Dixon, but the first since 2004. The Greyhounds' playoff run featured seven wins over teams that were all ranked in the Indiana Top 20. Carmel had key victories over Dublin Coffman (Dublin, Ohio), Reitz Memorial and Columbus North. Backes finished the season with 16 goals and nine assists. Fellow senior Samantha Tiongson, who has committed to Toldeo, was in goal for Carmel's 15 shutout victories. A trio of juniors proved important in Carmel's offense: Xavier-bound Tori Doss (17 goals, 12 assists), Samford commit Molly Pittman (14 goals, 15 assists) and Western Kentucky commit Christine Gordon (seven goals, 16 assists). |
| 2 (2) | Franklin Franklin, TN | 24-0 | Season complete. Tennessee Class AAA state champion. Franklin secured its place among the nation's elite with a 3-0 victory over Farragut in the state final. | 4 (4) | Northern Highlands Allendale, NJ | 24-0 | Season complete. New Jersey Group 3 state champion. Jackie Reyneke and Hana Kerner scored goals in the final 10 minutes as Northern Highlands capped a perfect season with a 2-0 state final victory over Moorestown. Reyneke's goal was from a long throw-in that glanced off the keeper to break a scoreless tie. This outcome marks Northern Highlands' first outright state title. The team handed long-time New Jersey power and former POWERADE FAB 50-ranked Ramapo (19-4-0) all four of its losses this season: twice in league play, once in the county tournament and once in the playoffs. |
| 5 (5) | Strongsville Strongsville, OH | 21-2 | Season complete. Ohio Division I state champion. The POWERADE FAB 50 preseason No. 1 team rebounded from a pair of early season losses to prove itself the best team in Ohio. Alyssa Pejic followed up a rebound from the initial shot by Emily Ogle, resulting in the lone goal in Strongsville's 1-0 state final victory over Dublin Jerome. The victory marked Strongsville's fourth state title since 1998. Strongsville boasted wins over POWERADE FAB 50-ranked McDonogh (Owings Mills, Md.) and Massillon Jackson. Strongsville had a loss to Baylor (Chattanooga, Tenn.). Ashley Meier earned first-team all-state honors from the coaches association. Allison Sender was a second-team pick. |
| 6 (6) | Maria Carrillo Santa Rosa, CA | 22-1 | Season complete. CIF North Coast Division I champion. Katie Mohr, one of three Maria Carrillo players committed to Arizona State, scored three goals in a 12-minute window en route to Maria Carrillo's 5-0 victory over Montgomery in the final. Sara Tosti and Rachel Sellner also have committed to Arizona State. |
| 7 (7) | Tualatin Tualatin, OR | 19-0 | Season complete. Oregon Class 6A state champion. Boise State commit Anna-Marie Popma converted a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, marking her 100th career goal, to help Tualatin to a 1-0 victory over Sunset in the state final. Tualatin shutout 17 of its 19 opponents this season, allowing only two goals -- both coming during the playoffs. The state title marks the program's third since 2005. Senior Cassie Baldwin scored a team-high 26 goals. Popma, who missed a month during the season due to injury, had 23. Her 100 goals broke the school record previously held by Stanford standout Courtney Verloo, who had 97. Keeper Celeste Cota-Wockenfuss was in goal for the 17 shutouts. Tualatin played the state final without sophomore standout Jill Farley, who was in Florida preparing for the US Youth Soccer ODP Interregional event. |
| 8 (8) | Veterans Memorial Peabody, MA | 22-0-2 | Season complete. Massachusetts Division 1 state champion. Senior Katie Brunelle's goal late in the first half carried Peabody to its first girls' soccer state title with a 1-0 victory over East Longmeadow. The victory marked the first state title for any girls team at the school since 1985. Peabody dominated play, led by senior star Haley Dowd, who is a Boston College commit. Peabody has made POWERADE FAB 50 appearances the past three seasons, but this is the first time the Tanners finishes in the rankings. |
| 9 (9) | Skyline Sammamish, WA | 18-0-2 | Season complete. Washington Class 4A state champion. Lianna Simms, a defender, converted a penalty kick for her first goal of the season midway through the first half to lift Skyline to a 1-0 victory over Bellarmine Prep. Jackie Wilson ended with a team-high seven goals. Sydne Tingey and Anna Deweirdt each added six goals. Senior keeper and Denver commit Tina Vargas had 10 shutouts. |
| 10 (10) | Alta Sandy, UT | 19-1 | Season complete. Utah Class 5A state champion. BYU commit Michele Murphy's 65th minute goal carried Alta to a 1-0 victory over Viewmont and the program's fifth state title in the past six seasons. Murphy finished the season as the state's 5A leading scorer with 38 goals. By beating Viewmont in the final, Alta avenged its only loss of the season. In addition, Alta had a victory over Montgomery (Santa Rosa, Calif.), a team that annually vies for a section title in California. Following Alta's loss to Viewmont, the team rolled off a state record 12 straight shutouts and finished the year with a state record 18 shutouts. Alta surrendered only four goals in 20 matches. The team's state title marked the program's eighth since 1999. In addition to Murphy heading to BYU, the following Alta players also have committed to colleges: Lexe Selman (Arizona), Taylor Campbell (BYU) and Megan Millerberg (Utah Valley). All seven seniors on the roster started and were part of three titles during their high school career. |
| 11 (11) | La Salle Academy Providence, RI | 20-0-2 | Season complete. Rhode Island Division I state champion. Boston College commits McMenzie Meehan (80 goals) and Madison Meehan (44 assists) sparked the program, which is now riding a 74-match undefeated streak. Since Rhode Island offers little competition to this powerhouse program, its most compelling result this year was a 4-4 tie with Bishop Feehan (Attleboro, Mass.), a former Top 10 team that lost in the Massachusetts playoffs. |
| 12 (12) | Hamilton Southeastern Fishers, IN | 20-1-2 | Season complete. Indiana Class 2A state runner-up. Hamilton Southeastern's undefeated run ended with a 1-0 loss to Carmel in the state final. | 15 (15) | Saint Johns College Washington, DC | 11-2-1 | Season complete. Washington Catholic Athletic Conference champion. Twelve players have committed to college programs, led by Maryland-bound Shannon Collins and Maisie McCune and Yale commit Ally Grossman. In the final, Collins' corner kick found the net in a 1-0 victory over Bishop Ireton. |
| 16 (16) | Bishop Ireton Alexandria, VA | 12-3-1 | Season complete. Washington Catholic Athletic Conference runner-up. | 17 (17) | Good Counsel Olney, MD | 19-1 | Season complete. Washington Catholic Athletic Conference semifinalist. Good Counsel's perfect season and its stay at No. 1 ended with a 2-0 upset loss to Bishop Ireton (Alexandria, Va.) in the WCAC semifinals. Good Counsel played without its star player and leading scorer Midge Purce, who had received a red card in the team's previous match. | 21 (21) | Auburn Auburn, MA | 22-0-1 | Season complete. Massachusetts Division 2 state champion. Junior Catrina Atanda, who has committed to Northwestern, added 14 goals and nine assists. Sophomore Jessica Goldman scored 11 goals and 10 assists. |
| 23 (23) | Pingry School Martinsville, NJ | 21-1-1 | Season complete. New Jersey Non-Public A state champion. Corey Delaney scored the deciding goal as Pingry rallied from a 1-0 deficit for a 2-1 victory over Red Bank Catholic in the state final. The victory marked Pingry's first state title since 2006 and the fifth for the program. Damstrom scored 22 goals, Delaney had 19 and Blackwood added 11. |
