A dozen exceptional student-athletes -- already honored as National Player of the Year in their respective sports -- are contenders for the 10th annual Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year Award. Susan Goldman/GatoradeDallas Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith stuns South Grand Prairie (Texas) senior Abraham Hall with the Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year trophy.Gatorade made the announcement Wednesday afternoon at the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth with Smith posing as a celebrity reporter conducting a mock television interview with the teens before breaking the news.
“It's nice to know there are kids today who understand the significance of their role in their schools and communities," said Smith, the NFL leader in career rushing yards with 18,355, who won the 1986-87 Gatorade National Football Player of the Year trophy as a high school senior. "They're willing to make the sacrifice to be one of the best athletes in the country, and to be able to recognize them for that is a wonderful thing. They're humble, classy kids who have been given a tremendous opportunity, and I know they'll do their best to make the most of that opportunity."
Hall, a 5-foot-11 senior, won the 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 10.19 seconds and the 200-meter dash in a personal-best 20.58 at the Class 5A state championships, leading the Warriors to a fourth-place finish as a team. The 100-meter clocking ranks No. 8 in prep history while the 200 time ranks No. 18 in history. Only seven boys in high school history rank in the top 10 of one event and the top 20 of the other.

Named Class 4A Most Outstanding Competitor, he ran the lead leg for the 4x400-meter relay squad that broke the tape in 3:28.60 and anchored the second-place 4x200-meter relay quartet that finished in 1:31.42. His 110-meter hurdles time at the state meet ranked No. 5 among Northwest prep competitors in 2012 at the time of his selection.

He also captured the high jump, clearing six feet, four inches. Athletic achievement: Crozier won individual Washington Catholic Athletic Conference titles in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:18.55 and the 3,200-meter run in 9:28.71, and earned second place in the 800-meter run in 1:59.64 this spring, leading the Eagles to second-place in the WCAC championships. The 2011-12 Gatorade District of Columbia Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, he also broke the tape in the 800 (1:59.73) and the 1,600 (4:18.84) at the Draper Invitation in early May. Crozier competed at this month’s New Balance Nationals Outdoor championships earning 10th place in the 3,000-meter run (8:34.65) and 14th place in the 2-mile run (9:12.21), both of which ranked among the top 50 times by prep competitors in 2012 at the time of his selection.
Academic excellence: Crozier has maintained a 3.85 GPA in the classroom.
Exemplary character: A member of the National Honor Society and his school’s student council, he has volunteered locally on behalf of the Arlington Food Assistance Center and participated in a Christian retreat program in association with this church youth group.

Athletic achievement: Crozier won individual Washington Catholic Athletic Conference titles in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:18.55 and the 3,200-meter run in 9:28.71, and earned second place in the 800-meter run in 1:59.64 this spring, leading the Eagles to second-place in the WCAC championships. The 2011-12 Gatorade District of Columbia Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, he also broke the tape in the 800 (1:59.73) and the 1,600 (4:18.84) at the Draper Invitation in early May. Crozier competed at this month’s New Balance Nationals Outdoor championships earning 10th place in the 3,000-meter run (8:34.65) and 14th place in the 2-mile run (9:12.21), both of which ranked among the top 50 times by prep competitors in 2012 at the time of his selection.
Academic excellence: Crozier has maintained a 3.85 GPA in the classroom.
Exemplary character: A member of the National Honor Society and his school’s student council, he has volunteered locally on behalf of the Arlington Food Assistance Center and participated in a Christian retreat program in association with this church youth group.

The reigning World Junior Champion in the 400 meters, he also anchored the 4x400-meter relay quartet to a state title in 3:14.46. Hall finished second in the 400 at this month’s USA Track and Field Junior Outdoor Championships and his best time at the distance ranked as the nation’s No. 2 performance among prep competitors in 2012 at the time of his selection.
Academic excellence: Hall has maintained a B average in the classroom.
