ESPN RISE's Athletes of the Week
Lauren Corp, a girls' volleyball player from Lutheran High in Orange, Calif., and Trevor Dunbar, a boys' cross country runner from Kodiak High in Kodiak, Alaska, have been chosen as the fourth ESPN RISE National Boys and Girls Athletes of the Week.
Corp, a senior outside hitter, is averaging 11.5 kills per match for a team that lost its first game but since has established itself as one of the nation's best with 20 straight wins. Corp has been the MVP of the past two tournaments her team has won, including the Dave Mohs Orange County Championships, in which she had 81 kills in seven matches. In Corp's most recent match, she had 26 kills in a five-game win over Lakewood, which was the preseason national No. 1 in the ESPN RISE FAB 50. Corp, who is the younger sister of USC quarterback Aaron Corp (the California Mr. Football State Player of the Year in 2006), carries a 3.8 GPA and has signed with St. Mary's College in Moraga. For a full feature story on Corp, see CalHiSports.com on Thursday.

East Region Athletes of the WeekMalcolm Manswell (River Hill, Clarksville, Md.) Manswell, one of Maryland's top soccer prospects, had a goal and one assist as the Hawks remained undefeated with a victory over Howard County League rival Atholton. Manswell, who was a National Blue Ribbon Student in 2007, has trained and played soccer in Scotland.
Kaitlyn Kerr (Pennington Prep, Pennington, N.J.) Kerr had two goals and an assist in Pennington's 4-1 win over The Hun School, then scored twice in the team's 3-0 victory over Germantown Academy (Pa.). Kerr has a team-best 10 goals and nine assists and is considering offers from Virginia, Duke, Boston College and Florida State. Her team is No. 1 this week in the ESPN RISE FAB 50 girls soccer rankings.
Southeast Region Athletes of the WeekJustin Davis (Myers Park, Charlotte, N.C.) Davis is the leading scorer and an all-state candidate from a team that started this week at 12-0 and currently is in the top half of the ESPN RISE FAB 50 boys soccer rankings. Davis came through in the clutch last week with a game-winning goal to give Myers Park a 2-1 win over South Mecklenburg.
Ashley Brasovan (Wellington, Palm Beach, Fla.) The defending Foot Locker Cross Country National Champion has kept things low key in the early season -- until now. In Florida's biggest invite, the flrunners.com Invitational, she rolled to an eye-popping course record of 16:47 over the 5K course, beating two fellow Florida Foot Locker Finalists by a minute. That should boost her confidence going into this weekend's Great American Race of Champions in Birmingham, Ala., where she will try to defend her 2007 crown against the year's top national girls field.
Midwest Region Athletes of the WeekMax Lackowecki (Evansville Memorial, Evansville, Ind.) The sophomore standout delivered the first two goals in Memorial's 6-1 semifinal win over Cape Central (Mo.) and scored the first goal in Memorial's 2-0 championship win over St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron, Ohio) in the Strodtman Bracket of the Gateway City Soccer Classic.
Stephanie Morgan (Barnesville, Ohio) She captured her third straight individual cross country title in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference meet and won by 28 seconds over the runner-up. She clocked 18:33 over the 5,000-meter course at Meadowbrook High School in Byesville, Ohio. Morgan, a defending state champion, clocked one of the nation's fastest mile times this past spring in winning the Penn Relays' high school event in 4:41.22.
Southwest Region Athletes of the WeekKyle Schraier (Christian Brothers, St. Louis, Mo.) Although teammate Zach Hundelt was named tournament MVP, it was Schraier who added the scoring touch as Christian Brothers won the Victor Arbelaez Bracket of the Gateway City Soccer Classic over the weekend. Schraier had a goal and one assist to propel Christian Brothers to a 3-1 semifinal win over St. John the Baptist. His tallies came after the match was tied at 1. In the final against Marquette, Schraier delivered a well-placed header for the game-clinching goal in a 3-0 victory.
Heather Leaverton (Pearland, Texas) Leaverton's school suffered a direct hit by Hurricane Ike, and for two weeks, there were no classes or sports. The district rescheduled all matches, which resulted in seven matches over 10 days for Leaverton and her teammates. Despite that schedule, Pearland won every match and took sole possession of first place in its district. Leaverton led the way in all seven matches with 103 kills, 14 aces and 101 digs. "She led the team by being aggressive and pushing her teammates every point of every game," coach John Turner said.
