BECKY KORTUM

HOPKINS GIRLS' ICE HOCKEY

No individual accolade will completely soothe the frustration of falling in the state championship game, but a Player of the Year honor will certainly lessen the sting. Kortum's outstanding season for the Royals culminated in the Associated Press Player of the Year award in girls' hockey. Hopkins fell to Stillwater, 5-3, on Feb. 28, but Kortum's season was otherwise a success. The senior scored 43 goals and added 28 assists in 30 games and ended her career with more than 200 points.

DREW JOHNSON

EDINA BOYS' SWIMMING

Johnson was at his best at the Class AA boys' swimming state championships on March 7, and his team certainly needed the effort. The junior won individual state titles in both the 100 and 200 freestyle races, then joined his Edina teammates to win the 400 free relay, which clinched the team championship. The three wins were critical, as Edina just edged Minnetonka, 268-225, to earn the AA title for the second consecutive year.
