BOYS' ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

LANCE STEPHENSON
Lincoln / Basketball
Stephenson might be the most accomplished player in New York City's storied history. He wrapped up a brilliant four-year career as the state's alltime leading scorer (surpassing Lincoln alum and NBA guard Sebastian Telfair) and the only player to win four PSAL city titles. As a sophomore and junior, he added state Federation crowns to his trophy case. As a senior, Stephenson averaged 31.9 points and 12.7 rebounds per game. A McDonald's All-American, he is the No. 12 recruit in the ESPNU 100.

OTHER FINALISTS

NICK GALASSO
West Islip / Lacrosse
Despite being a junior, the UNC-bound Galasso is arguably the nation's top player. In a clash between state powers, Galasso led the Lions to a 10-4 win over Chaminade with five goals (on only six shots) on April 11.

MIGUEL MAYSONET
Riverhead / Football
Maysonet, a senior running back, earned Gatorade State Player of the Year honors while leading Riverhead to the Long Island Division 2 title. He led Long Island with 2,328 rushing yards, while adding 30 touchdowns.

MARCUS STROMAN
Patchogue-Medford / Baseball
The Duke-bound senior SS/RHP is a treat to watch. Stroman started the season in style during a 5-3 win over Longwood. He scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th and earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

GIRLS' ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

BRIA HARTLEY
North Babylon / Basketball
It takes a lot to impress New York basketball fans. And with so many great players at perennial city powers like Christ the King, Murry Bergtraum and St. Michael, it was going to take a lot for Hartley to win over the masses. She did it with ease, averaging 22.4 points, 5.5 steals, 5.3 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game, while guiding North Babylon to the Suffolk County Class AA semifinals. She is the No. 4 junior in the ESPNU HoopGurlz rankings and was Gatorade State Player of the Year.

OTHER FINALISTS

KIM DeCESARE
Massapequa / Soccer
DeCesare, a Duke-bound senior, stepped up when fellow All-American Victoria DiMartino missed the season to play with the U-17 National Team. She scored 16 goals, earning Gatorade State Player of the Year honors.

EMILY LIPARI
Roslyn / Cross Country + Track
A two-time Gatorade State Runner of the Year, Lipari won Class A and Federation state titles. The junior placed ninth at the Foot Locker Northeast Regional and 11th at Foot Locker Nationals. She won the mile at Nike Indoor Nationals.

LAUREN MAKSYM
Farmingdale / Lacrosse
The nation's top goalie, Maksym is headed to North Carolina. First, the senior is looking for a state title. She got off to a good start with 17 saves in a 14-7 win over Massapequa and its high-powered offense on April 2.
