Mission College Prep (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) senior Jordan Hasay has made her name known in the distance running world. The senior cross country and track and field runner holds the high school record in the 1,500 with a time of 4:14.50. Before she graduates and heads to college, she passes on some of her pre-race traditions.
Day before a race
Try not to think too much about the race. Just find other things to keep your mind occupied - read a good book, listen to music, watch a movie. Eat a good, healthy dinner. Italian restaurants are always a safe choice. Get a good night's sleep.Race day
Eat a good breakfast. For me, I like to wake up at least three hours before the race. At this time I'll have a bowl of granola and a protein bar with milk. This is a typical breakfast for me. It's important to try to eat something that you are familiar with so it doesn't upset your stomach.Warm up
Come up with a routine that works for you and stick with it. I like to listen to my iPod while I'm waiting to warm up. Then, starting an hour before the race, I'll do 20 minutes of light jogging, drills and some strides.Things to remember for your warm up and race
Have confidence in yourself!! Remember all of the hard training that you have put in. The most important thing is to be prepared. Think back to some of your most recent great workouts and races. Think about these moments and tell yourself that you can do it. Tell yourself that you may not win, you may not even be close to the winner, but you are not going to run poorly. Remember to run as hard as you can and give it everything you have. And most importantly, have FUN! This is what you love! Some quotes/sayings to keep in mind
"To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift"- Pre (Steve Prefontaine)"Hard things take time to do. Impossible things take a little longer"- Percy Cerutty
"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up" - Thomas Edison
