For most athletes, winning a Gatorade Player of the Year Award reflects a single-minded dedication to one's sport. For Green Mountain Valley's (Waitsfield, Vt.) David Sinclair, it reflects, well, some really impressive cross-training.
The 2009-10 Gatorade Vermont Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, Sinclair finished second in this year's Division I state championship meet -- losing in the closest finish in state history -- after winning the title in 2008. He was also Vermont's top finisher at the New England Cross Country Championships, but that was just a warmup for his Nordic skiing season.
Sinclair placed fifth in the 10k Classic at the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships in Anchorage, and is one of 12 skiers (six boys, six girls) named to the 17-and-under team which will compete for the U.S. at the Scandinavian Cup in Kuopio, Finland, Jan. 29-31.
Sinclair, who has maintained a 3.93 GPA despite his frequent travels, will attend Dartmouth College this fall. The Big Green boast one of the top ski programs in the East, and Sinclair isn't expected to compete for the track or cross country teams -- but maybe they'll let him join in for a little extra training once the snow melts.
