Newcomers populate latest Top 20

While the top nine teams all remained the same, other than Montrose Christian jumping to No. 1, there are five new teams that have entered the MDVarsity.com High School Basketball Top 20 Ranking.

Thanks to wins over Potomac and Lackey, North Point makes its debut. Other new teams to enter the rankings are Good Counsel, Duval, Huntingtown and Georgetown Prep.

This is the second MDVarsity.com Basketball Top 20 Ranking of the season. The weekly poll has input from media members around the state and each week we offer up an overall state Top 20 which is arrived at based on the classification rankings which the state's media can influence.

The original Maryland basketball state rankings started in the mid-1990s and then it was DeMatha and Stu Vetter-coached St. John's at Prospect Hall (now St. John's Catholic Prep) as perennial powers. More than 12 years later, two things remain consistent -- DeMatha is near the top and a Vetter-coached team, this time Montrose Christian, is leading the pack.
