6/30/2014

(Editor's note: In the Gate producer Barry Abrams presents the Declaration of Independence as recited by members of the horse racing community. Below is a guide to whose voice you are hearing as you listen to the audio clip a year in the making.)

Stuart Janney: Co-owner, 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb
When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary

Ken Ramsey: Owner, Ramsey Thoroughbreds
for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another,

Mark Casse: 5-time Sovereign Award-winning trainer (Canada)
and to assume, among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station

Richard Mandella: Trained 8 Breeders' Cup winners
to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them,

D. Wayne Lukas: 14-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer by earnings
a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires

Vic Stauffer: Hollywood Park track announcer, 2001-2013
that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

Mike Mitchell: California-based trainer, purse winnings over $65M
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal

Leah Gyarmati: Trainer, 2014 Acorn Stakes-winner Sweet Reason
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights,

Taylor Rice: New York-based apprentice jockey
that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Pete Rotondo Sr: Character, "Horseplayers" reality show, Esquire TV
That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men

Mandy Pope: Owner, Whisper Hill Farm
deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

Chip McEwen: Wounded Warrior Stable
That whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it.

Art Sherman: Trainer, California Chrome
The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations,

Ron Winchell: Co-owner, Winchell Thoroughbreds
all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states.

Mike Maker: 2-time Breeders' Cup-winning trainer
We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, assembled,

Jack Wolf: Owner, Starlight Racing
appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions,

Rick Violette: Trainer, President, New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association
do, in the name, and by the authority of the good people of these colonies, solemnly publish and declare,

Jim Wilson: Director, "50-1" movie
that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states;

Harvey Pack: Former New York Racing Association television host
that they are ABSOLVED from all allegiance to the British Crown,

Tom Durkin: NYRA track announcer
and that all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved;

Jackson Knowlton: Co-owner, 2003 Kentucky Derby/Preakness winner, Funny Cide
and that as free and independent states, they have full power to levy war, conclude peace,

Ken McPeek: Trained 2002 Belmont Stakes winner, Sarava
contract alliances, establish commerce, and to do all other acts and things which independent states may of right do.

Steve Coburn: Co-owner, California Chrome
And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence,

Tom Chukas: President/COO, Maryland Jockey Club
we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.
