Maragh to miss at least two weeks

Jockey Rajiv Maragh, who was involved in a spill in the second race at Aqueduct Racetrack Dec. 31, will be sidelined at least two weeks after sustaining a hairline fracture of the T3 vertebrae in his upper back, according to his agent, Matt Muzikar.

Maragh took off his mounts at the New York racetrack Jan. 1 after spending the evening of Dec. 31 at North Shore University Hospital. He was expected to be released later Jan. 1.

"The doctors want to reevaluate him again in two weeks," Muzikar said.

The jockey was aboard the 2-year-old filly Lady of Gold and finished fourth in a one-mile maiden special weight contest, the second on the card, when the incident occurred. The winner of that race, Squeal, stumbled and fell after the wire and Maragh fell as his mount, Lady of Gold, tried to avoid Squeal. Lady of Gold appeared uninjured in the incident. Squeal got up, ran loose, and sustained a chest laceration as she attempted to jump the rail from the inner track to the main.

Maragh had five scheduled races for Jan. 1, including the $75,000 Interborough Stakes, in which he was slated to ride Mildly Offensive, 5-2 on the morning line.
