The mutuel field, or "All Others", wagering interest in 2012's first of three pools in Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed as the 3-2 favorite on Sunday after leading all three days of Pool 1. "All Others," the wagering interest that includes all three-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual betting interests in KDFW Pool 1, was the 9-5 morning-line favorite, but dropped to 3-5 by late Friday evening. The odds drifted up to 6-5 on Saturday, and by the time wagering closed at 6 p.m. (EST) on Sunday it had risen to 3-2. The once-beaten Union Rags emerged as a strong fans' choice as the favored individual horse to win this year's Run for the Roses. The Michael Matz-trained son of Dixie Union was the third choice on the morning-line at 10-1 behind Algorithms' 8-1 opening odds, but quickly became the favored individual choice when falling to 8-1 by Friday evening. The Grade 1 Champagne Stakes winner's odds reached 7-1 on Saturday and stayed steady to close at that price. On Sunday it was announced that Julien Leparoux will take over the mount on Union Rags from Javier Castellano, who chose to stay aboard Algorithms when the two colts meet up in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes on February 26 at Gulfstream Park. The Todd Pletcher-trained Algorithms, a bay colt by Bernardini, defeated champion two-year-old colt Hansen by five lengths while making his sophomore bow in the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes on January 29. He became the second favorite among the individual interests when closing at 12-1. Wagering on Pool 1 set a new single pool record, with $631,304 in win and exacta wagers. The overall total included $494,263 in win bets and exacta wagering of $137,041. The previous record of $620,362 was wagered on Pool 1 in 2005. All bets in the KDFW are $2 minimum wagers, and there are no refunds on any wager placed during a Derby Future pool. If it is determined during any of the three 2012 Derby Future pools that an individual betting interest has suffered an illness, injury or other circumstance that would prevent that horse from competing in the Kentucky Derby, wagering on that betting interest will be suspended immediately. The remaining KDFW pools are scheduled for March 2-4 and March 30-April 1, and all feature both win and exacta wagering. Information on the KDFW is available at www.KentuckyDerby.com.
