Churchill to tighten security

There will be increased security for several days before the May 4 Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Horse Racing Commission officials said.

The New York Times reported April 13 the KHRC will work with Churchill Downs and law enforcement agencies on the stepped-up security, which will include 24-hour surveillance of Derby horses. According to the Times article, veterinarians will have to sign log-in sheets, and drug testing will be broadened.

Churchill doesn't have a stakes barn like the one at Pimlico Race Course, home of the Preakness Stakes, second leg of the Triple Crown. Thus, more people are needed to monitor activity at different barns.

KHRC executive director John Ward told the newspaper the measures are meant to restore public confidence in racing.

The new security plan wasn't publicly discussed when the KHRC last met April 9.
