Stablemates Tempera, Imperial Gesture finish 1-2
ELMONT, N.Y. -- Tempera used a strong stretch run to overtake stablemate Imperial Gesture and win the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies on Saturday by 1 1/2 lengths.
Ridden by David Flores, Tempera was trapped behind horses as long shot Imperial Gesture and Bella Bellucci ran neck-and-neck at the top of the stretch. Tempera moved outside and ran down Imperial Gesture as Bella Bellucci faded a bit.
Tempera covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.09, a Breeders' Cup record. Not bad for a filly that had never run more than seven furlongs.
"There's a feeling that if you get her to relax, she accelerates when you ask her to," Flores said.
Tempera paid $25.80, $11.80 and $7.50 as she won for the third time in her last four races. Imperial Gesture, a 50-1 shot, returned $41.80 and $14.80 with Frankie Dettori aboard. Bella Bellucci showed for $5.30.
The exacta paid $768, a ticket trainer Eoin Harty certainly was holding. It was his first Breeders' Cup win.
Shesastonecoldfox and Take Charge Lady jockeyed for the early lead as You ran off the pace in fifth. Imperial Gesture and Bella Bellucci moved to the front on the far turn, with You still not making any sort of move.
Frankel fell to 0-for-38 in Breeders' Cup mounts and this one had to hurt. He felt You had the best chance of winning of his six mounts.
