ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, ILL. -- The Breeders' Cup Mile was a disaster for Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien.

	Domedriver with Thierry Thulliez wins the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Domedriver was the surprise winner of the $1 million turf race in which overwhelming favorite Rock of Gibraltar was unable to overcome a poor start and another of O'Brien's horses, Landseer, suffered a serious leg injury and was put down.

Rock of Gibraltar, co-owned by Manchester United soccer coach Alex Ferguson, had won seven straight Group I races overseas and was not expected to face a serious challenge on Saturday. The 3-year-old colt had won each of his five starts this year, all Group I races at a mile.

But jockey Nick Kinane kept his mount far back in the 14-horse field, and it cost him. Rock of Gibraltar made a late surge on the outside, flying past numerous horses.

But Domedriver, in a close race with Good Journey, had built too big a lead and crossed the wire first, paying $54.000, $18.20 and $5.20.

Rock of Gibraltar edged Good Journey for second, paying $3.40 and $3.560. Good Journey showed for $3.60.

Landseer, the winner of the French 2000 Guineas, collided with another horse at the top of the stretch, throwing jockey Edgar Prado. While Prado was fine, NBC Sports reported that Landseer was seriously injured and was destroyed.

Landseer likely would have been the favorite if Rock of Gibraltar was entered in the $4 million Classic instead of the Mile.
