ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Starine, a 13-1 shot with a fondness for yielding turf, emerged from a closely-grouped field at the top of the stretch to post a clear-cut victory Saturday in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

The race marked a major coup for Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, who not only trains Starine but also owns her. In addition, Frankel is the trainer of Banks Hill, who finished second, 1 1/2 lengths behind her stablemate.

"When it rained and rained and rained, I thought we had a chance," a beaming Frankel said afterward.

Starine, who was supplemented by Frankel for $90,000, raced in fourth for much of the 1 1/4-mile Filly and Mare Turf, which was led for the first mile by Kazzia. Turning for home, the pack caught up to Kazzia, with Starine, a 5-year-old gray French-bred, going past fastest of all. Jockey John Velazquez did not even have to put Starine to a hard drive, as she glided away to her tenth win from 33 lifetime starts, finishing in 2:03.57.

Islington finished third, a neck behind Banks Hill, the 2001 winner. Golden Apples was another neck back in fourth in the field of 12.

The victory was the second of the BC card for Velazquez, who also won the Juvenile Fillies on Storm Flag Flying.

"I had a perfect trip," said Velazquez. "I saved some ground, and at the three-eighths pole, I let her do her own thing. When I asked, she responded right away."

The $2 exacta paid $156.60; the $2 trifecta, $1,060.40; and the $2 superfecta $2,638.40.
