With an excellent ride from the second post under jockey Pat Valenzuela, Adoration broke quickly to the lead from the second gate. As the field turned for home, Adoration showed a finishing kick that was expected but never came from Sightseek, who finished fourth. Adoration covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.17 and returned a staggering $83.40, $33.40 and $25.80. Elloluv, with Corey Nakatani, ran just off the pace until the stretch and paid $9.20 and $12.20. Second choice Got Koko finished strong under Alex Solis and showed for $6.80. Elloluv has been first or second in five of six starts this year. Breaking from the fifth gate in the seven-horse field, Sightseek was bumped early and eventually pinned to the rail, running four to five lengths off the pace for the first half-mile. "We kinda got squeezed behind other horses, which is really where I wanted to be," Sightseek jockey Jerry Bailey said. "But I just didn't have any horse today." It was another disappointment for trainer Bobby Frankel, who fell to 2-for-50 in Breeders' Cup races. Sightseek had finished no worse than second in seven races this year. Adoration was shadowed throughout the first half-mile by Elloluv and inched further ahead as the field approached the stretch. She saved her best for last and gave trainer Dave Hofmans his first Breeders' Cup win since scoring with Alphabet Soup in the 1996 Classic. "Dave told me to put her on the lead to take advantage of the race," said Valenzuela, who notched his seventh career Breeders' Cup win but first since 1992. The field was weakened by the withdrawal of reigning Horse of the Year Azeri, who had been beaten here last month by Got Koko in the Lady's Secret Handicap. | |||||||||
