![]() on ESPN.com | Favored Islington takes Filly & Mare Turf SportsTicker ARCADIA, Cali. -- Kieren Fallon wasn't going to let Islington come up short two years in a row.
Islington charged hard down the stretch and moved a neck in front of L'Ancresse with less than a furlong to the wire. Under Fallon's whip, she was able to match a push from L'Ancresse stride for stride and won by a neck. "Everything went right for us today," Fallon said. "It was a fabulous performance." In giving Fallon his first Breeders' Cup win, the favored Islington covered the 1 1/4 miles in 1:59.13 and returned $7.80, $6 and $4.30. L'Ancresse, with Edgar Prado aboard, paid $32.60 and $13. Yesterday was deemed third after a photo finish and paid $7.80. Trainer Sir Michael Stoute notched his third Breeders' Cup win and first since 2000, when Kalanisi won the Turf. Fallon was aboard Islington in this race last year, finishing a disappointing third, 1 1/2 lengths behind winner Starine. He was determined to guide the 4-year-old filly to the winner's circle this year. Fallon remained patient in the pack as Bien Nicole sprinted to the front and led by as much as eight lengths. But she began fading into the far turn, and the race was on. L'Ancresse caught Bien Nicole first and assumed the lead on the rail. But Islington was charging hard, setting up the furious finish. "She was running hard every step of the way," Prado said. "The winner was just a little too much." It was another disappointment for trainer Bobby Frankel, who saw none of his three entries run in the money and remained winless on the day. Heat Haze was fourth, Megahertz fifth and Tates Creek eighth. The leading money winner in 2003 among trainers, Frankel began the day with just two winners in 49 Breeders' Cup entries. | |||||||||
