Action This Day last to first in Juvenile

ARCADIA, Cali. -- Long shot Action This Day rumbled from last to first and caught a fading field to win the $1.5 million Juvenile on Saturday at Santa Anita.

Ridden by David Flores, Action This Day came from way off the lead. He went outside to storm past horses, then through the middle of the field and into contention as the front-runners seemed to succumb to a combination of the heat and a blistering early pace.

In the stretch, Action This Day charged on the oustide past Minister Eric, who seemed to be the only other horse that had anything in the final furlong of the 1 1/8-mile race.

"I was just trying to get through and I got lucky," Flores said.

In his first stakes race, Action This Day won by three lengths, clocking 1:43.62 and giving Flores his second Breeders' Cup win. He also scored with Tempera in the 2001 Juvenile Fillies.

Continuing a trend of long shots in the winner's circle, Action This Day paid $55.60, $19.20 and $11. Minister Eric returned $8.80 and $7.20 under Alex Solis. Chapel Royal, with John Velazquez aboard, edged Tiger Hunt for third in a photo finish, paying $5.60.

Favored Cuvee faded badly after running just off the pace and finished last in the 12-horse field.

Trainer Richard Mandella scored a 1-2 finish and his second winner of the day. He also conditioned Halfbridled to victory in the Juvenile Fillies.

"I'm having a good day," he chuckled.

It didn't look that way out of the gate as Action This Day was nowhere near the lead, which was being traded by Race for Glory and Mambo Train. Just before the top of the stretch, Chapel Royal bolted to the front.

But all three horses began to wilt, allowing Minister Eric to forge forward. Solis knew the field was fading and thought he had a victory in his sights.

"Then I looked to my right," he said.

What he saw was Action This Day, having made his way through the pack, showing plenty of power for the stretch run.

"In the middle of the (far) turn he started going through horses and he kept feeling better and better," Flores said.
