The horses ran stride for stride for the last 100 yards, with High Chaparral holding a neck advantage. As they ran for home, they were joined on the outside by Johar, which found some late speed under Alex Solis. As they reached the wire, it appeared High Chaparral had won by a nose. But a photo finish showed that Johar had caught him, with the co-winners just a neck in front of a game Falbrav. In 144 races over 20 years, no Breeders' Cup event had ever finished in a dead heat. However, the Turf was the day's third straight race requiring a photo, as both the Filles and Mares Turf and Juvenile needed electronic assistance to separate third and fourth place. With a bit of an asterisk, 4-year-old High Chapparal became just the sixth horse to win a pair of Breeders' Cup races. Kinnane rode him to victory in this race last year. Johar gave trainer Richard Mandella his third win of the day, matching the 1988 event record set by D. Wayne Lukas. When Santa Anita hosted the Breeders' Cup 10 years ago, Mandella also scored in this race with Kotashaan. The second choice, High Chaparral clocked 2:24.20 paid $6.40, $6.20 and $3.50. Johar returned $13.60, $9 and $5.40 and Falbrav showed - barely - for $4.20. The Santa Anita turf has been kind to Johar, who has won five of seven starts here. Favored Storming Home, which crossed the wire first in three Grade I stakes races this year, was seventh in the nine-horse field. Balto Star predictably set the early pace before The Tin Man assumed the lead with one-half mile to go. High Chaparral sat a couple of lengths off the leaders, prepared to make a move. As the pace quickened, Kinnane remained patient as the early leaders faded and Falbrav assumed the pace. Both charged hard on the straightaway and were joined by Johar for a three-way gallop to the wire. | |||||||||
