Breeders' Cup picks

Special to ESPN.com

For Halloween, my daughter is thinking about going as Azeri in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Lone Star Park. She's going to put on a horse's head and a skirt and walk around the neighborhood ninth.

Horse racing's most noticeable stage father, D.Wayne Lukas, has actually done handicappers a favor by putting Azeri in the wrong spot. Two races are suddenly easier to figure, an automatic throw-out being such a rare gift in high-dollar events.

Opening the Form to the average Breeders' Cup race is like entering a house of mirrors. Similar images are everywhere.

The Pick Six, featuring races four through nine, is the most exciting lottery in the world. Most times, lottery payoffs involve a woman turning numbers toward a camera. Usually with a state-run lottery, you're fishing from a reservoir of dozens of numbers. Here at the Breeders' Cup, the most you're looking at are squares one through 14. Two dollars could get you millions.

The average Breeders' Cup race is so difficult to pick, everybody is looking for a tip.

Here's one edge I have found over the years.

In a Breeders' Cup turf race, the "All" wagering selection can be your best friend.

The phrase "racing luck" had to have sprouted from a turf race where three horses got cut off on the rail, and where the speed stopped but came back, and where two horses circled wide from last to cause a photo finish and a dead heat.

A few years back I found a horse that simply could not lose a Breeders' Cup turf race. I put the horse under All and hit an exacta that paid more than $300. The way Breeders' Cup handicapping seems to work is you find a certain sure thing and move it down one level and surround it by all the 20-1 shots you can afford.

Some people have a stigma about hammering the 'All' button. They think it's beneath them, that it's wishing instead of handicapping. But let me tell you something. Not having a clue about who is going to win a Breeders' Cup turf race can be the first step toward making a dollar.

Here is what the fastest lottery in the world looks like to me.
