Royal Ascot diary: Friday

Donald Trump fired Ivana from his marriage a few years ago. But Ivana was back at Royal Ascot with an Italian boyfriend who told everyone who would listen that he wants to open a restaurant of his own in New York. Now that might be a good bet.

And betting is what Royal Ascot is all about. The English love to bet. On anything. On everything.

Every June there is a large gambling market on color. Ivana was wearing the favorite color of the moment, pink. But you could not bet on what color she would wear, it was Queen Elizabeth's hat that got the most action.

I'm not kidding!

The legal Irish bookmaking firm of Paddy Power handles hundreds of thousands of pounds on what color hat Queen Elizabeth will wear each day. Yesterday being Ladies Day, even more was wagered. Blue was the favorite at 3-1, and white was at 10-1. White was the longshot winner.

On the race track, blue was the winning color. Frankie Dettori wore the royal blue silks of Godolphin to victory in the major race of the day, the Grade One Gold Cup. Papineau, by Singspiel, drew off in the stretch to win by a length and a half at a generous 5-1.

Dettori rewarded the crowd of 69,928 with his signature flying dismount, which I think he stole from Angel Cordero, Jr.

Those distinstive dark blue silks were again in the winners enclosure after the Grade Two Ribblesdale Stakes. Punctilious gave Frankie another in his quest for The London Clubs Trophy. Dettori is the odds on favorite to win the leading jockey title at Royal Ascot for the fifth time. You can bet on it.

Trainer Jeremy Nosada, who trained horses at Santa Anita for several season, had an impressive 2 year-old colt winner here on Thursday.

Blue Dakota remained undefeated in four starts. Jeremy has said his greatest thrill would be to win a Breeders' Cup event, so we shall see if Blue Dakota shows up at Lone Star. Don't bet on it.

Newspaper handicappers are popular with the betting public in most cities, but every day in The Guardian readers turn to see a daily box entitled "Bet With A Pet." Guardian handicapper Jamie Reid is in competition each day with a hamster. Yes, Turnip the Hampster! Last year the hampster had more Ascot winners than Jamie. This year Jamie, who can read the form, is beating the hapster by 34 pounds Sterling.

Friday's children were treated to the most impressive performance of the week by a true superstar. Attraction, a leggy 3 year-old filly trained by Mark Johnston, remained undefeated. Kevin Darley was the perfect partner for the four length tally. The Grade One Coronation Stakes was her eighth win. Earlier this year she won the Engish-Irish 1,000 Guineas double. And she won so easily on Friday, that an engagement against older fillies or the boys must be on the menu. If only we could get her owner, The Duke of Roxburghe, to make Attraction one of the attractions at The Breeders' Cup. I'd like to bet on it.

On Friday, Queen Elizabeth had a runner in the Wolferton Stakes. She was in the paddock, presumably to give jockey Kieren Fallon his riding instructions. Her hat this afternoon was light blue. The 5/2 choice, since she had not yet worn blue this entire week.

But her horse was even shorter odds. Promotion was the 2-1 favorite. The Queen's horse finished second, beaten six lengths by Red Fort.

It's a good thing The Queen doesn't know Donald Trump, he would have told her to fire the jockey.

It's a good thing Donald Trump doesn't own The Guardian, he would have fired Turnip the Hampster.
